Rock rolls over Shepherd, 20-9

Amy Halls scored six goals and handed out one assist to lead The Rock to a 20-9 non-conference win over Shepherd Saturday in the annual Lax-4-Life game at Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team won its second non-conference game of the week with a 20-9 victory over Shepherd Saturday afternoon at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Saturday's game was also the annual Lax-4-Life game to raise support for teen suicide prevention and awareness. Both teams warmed up in special Lax-4-Life t-shirts and posed for a group photo following the game. This is the third year of the Lax-4-Life initiative, which spreads across all NCAA divisions of women's lacrosse.

With the win Saturday, Slippery Rock improves its season record to 6-4 overall. Shepherd drops to 5-5.

The Rock was dominant from the opening draw and posted advantages of 40-17 in total shots, 28-21 in ground balls and 24-7 in draw controls.

Amy Halls scored a game-high six goals and added one assist to lead the SRU offense. Casey Quinn added three goals and two assists to bring her career goal tally to 98.

Katie Roof scored three goals and handed out one assist to go along with a game-high six draw controls and five ground balls. Emma VanDenburg added one goal and two assists and posted game-highs of six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Samantha Eddy and Brittany Jaillet each scored two goals and Alex Slutsky scored one goal and handed out one assist. Lauren Laubach and Allison Richards each found the back of the net once and Morgan Pettit and Kourtney Pike each tallied one assist to cap the scorers.

Kat Elkins recorded her sixth win of the season in goal after making six saves. Ariel Gilbert also saw action between the pipes, playing the final 9:32 of the game and allowing two goals.

Krista Tippett led Shepherd with three goals, while Christie Ferrara added two goals and a game-high four assists.

Emily Melanson took the loss in goal, allowing 19 goals and recording 12 saves in 52 minutes of work. Katherine Lambert saw limited minutes in each half, allowing one goal and making two saves.

Slippery Rock put forth its most productive first half of the season, running out to a 14-6 halftime lead and never looking back.

VanDenburg and Halls opened the scoring with goals in the second and third minutes before Shepherd notched its first goal of the game at the 26:25 mark to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Rock answered with a three goal run, with tallies from Quinn, Halls and Jaillet, to open up a 5-1 lead. After Shepherd scored its second goal of the game with just over 20 minutes to play in the half, SRU answered with another three goal run. Two goals from Halls and one from Jaillet put The Rock out front 8-2.

Again Shepherd slowed the momentum by converting at the 15:10 mark, but Slippery Rock answered right back with another run, this time of five goals. Roof found the back of the net twice and goals from Quinn, Eddy and Laubach made the score 13-3 with 6:52 to play before the intermission.

From there, the teams traded goals and Shepherd struck with a last-second tally to send the game to the break with SRU leading 14-6.

The Rock put the game away with a three goal run to open the second half after Halls, Slutsky and Roof all scored to make it 17-6, a deficit Shepherd could not recover from.


Slippery Rock will continue its string of non-conference games with a trip to Lake Erie Tuesday, April 5. Game time is set for 6 p.m. The Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action April 9 when Kutztown visits for a 7 p.m. night game.
