INSTITUTE, W. Va. -- Sarah Lynch and
Janelle Krantz combined to win three matches Saturday afternoon and lead the 39th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over hosting West Virginia State University in NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional regular-season action.
Lynch and Krantz teamed up for an 8-3 win in the No. 1 doubles match before they both won a singles match.
Lynch, the No. 3-ranked singles player in the region according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking, won a 6-1, 6-3 victory over fifth-ranked Andrea Slusarciuc in the No. 1 singles match and Krantz scored a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 4 singles match.
The Rock, after losing two of the three doubles matches, rebounded to win five of six singles matches to record the team win and improve their season record to 11-3. SRU was ranked third in the latest ITA regional poll.
West Virginia State, which earned West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner-up honors during the fall season, saw its season record fall to 20-5. The Yellow Jackets were ranked fifth in the March 27 ITA regional poll.
SRU concludes its two-match road trip to West Virginia with a Sunday match at the University of Charleston, which won the WVIAC team title last fall was ranked fourth in the March 27 ITA regional poll.
Joining Lynch and Krantz as Rock winners in singles matches Saturday were
Dunja Drmac at No. 2,
Lauren Coggins at No. 5 and
Samantha Bruggeman at No. 6.
Drmac was the No. 10 singles player in the latest ITA regional rankings.
