#39 Rock netters complete weekend sweep with 5-4 win at Charleston

Sunday's win over the No. 2 team in the region came one day after SRU (12-3), the No. 3 team in the region, had knocked off the No. 4 team in the region, West Virginia State

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Juniors Sarah Lynch and Dunja Drmac each had a hand in the scoring of two points Sunday to lead the 39th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team to a hard-fought and important 5-4 win over hosting NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rival University of Charleston.

Lynch (left photo) teamed with sophomore Janelle Krantz to win a 9-8 (7-1) decision in the No. 1 doubles match, then won a 6-0, 6-1 decision in the No. 1 singles match.

Drmac teamed with freshman Lauren Coggins to win an 8-6 decision in the No. 2 doubles match before she scored a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win in the No. 2 singles match.

The other Rock point came via a 6-3, 6-2 win by sophomore Elisabeth Yetiskul in the No. 3 singles match.

Sunday's win over the reigning West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions was the second straight recorded by The Rock (12-3) in as many days against the WVIAC's top two teams.

SRU beat WVIAC runner-up West Virginia State University by a 6-3 score the previous day.

The back-to-back wins were also significant in light of the fact Charleston (20-5) and WVSU were ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the NCAA regional poll released March 31. SRU was sandwiched between those teams as the No. 3 team in the region.

Last weekend matches were the first of five straight SRU will play against regionally-ranked rivals in the final leg of the 2010-11 regular-season schedule.

The Rock returns to the courts Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Indiana (Pa.), the No. 5 team in the latest NCAA regional ranking.

SRU visits Edinboro for an April 9 match, then closes out its regular-season schedule with home matches April 11 and 12 against division rivals Mercyhurst and California (Pa.), the No. 6 and No. 1 teams in the regional poll.
