CHESTER, Pa. – Not only did freshman sprinter
Danisha Higgs qualify for the ECAC Outdoor championship meet in the 100 and 200 meter dashes as well as the 4x100 meter relay, but the native of the Bahamas also set a new program record in the 200 meter dash with her final time of 26.10 at the 2011 Widener University Invitational.
Higgs' record time broke the original mark of 26.31 set back in 2002 by Lakeisha Fairley. Since joining the track and field program Higgs holds two individual indoor records and was a part of the record setting indoor 4x100 relay team. As a member of the outdoor 4x100 relay team, Higgs along with
Shannon Loos,
Meghan Loos, and
Taylor Kutz earned a third place finish with their time of 50.78 seconds.
In the 100 meter dash, Higgs finished in 10th place with a time of 12.75, while Kutz recorded a 27th place finish with a time of 13.58 seconds. Kutz would then finish in 24th place in the 200 with her final time of 27.49 seconds.
Shannon Loos was right behind her in 25th place with a final time of 27.67 seconds.
The 400 meter dash would see
Shannon Loos lead her teammates with a 14th place finish (1:02.29).
Danielle DiPietro and sister Meghan were finished in 17th and 24th place respectively with times of 1:03.12 and 1:04.24.
Kim Hummel took 10th in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase with a time of 12:38.04, while
Gabby Stine crossed the finish line three spots behind her teammate with a time of 13:30.16.
The field events only saw
Christine Pallas competing for the red and white. In the shot put she placed 16th (28-07.75), in the high jump she finished in 12th place (80-10), and in the discus throw she finished in 11th place (76-08).
On the men's side, thrower
Dane Canonico also secured a spot at the ECAC Outdoor meet with his impressive throw of 47-06.50 in the shot put. That toss earned the sophomore second place.
Andrew Hettinger also had a strong afternoon as he finished in 12th place in the discus throw with a mark of 123-03. Canonico would later finish in 15th place in the hammer throw with another strong toss of 116-07.
Sean Potter sprinted his way to a 14th and 15th place finish in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes respectively. Potter closed out the 100 with a time of 11.47 seconds, while in the 200 he earned a final time of 23.06.
The 400 meter dash, saw
Anthony Glass earn the Lions top time of 52.19 seconds to finish in 21st place. Senior distance runner finished in 14th place in the extremely long 10,000 meter run with a time of 35:34.20
Oshane Rennie recorded a time of 16.16 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles and 57.27 in the 400 meter hurdles to finish in sixth and 10th place respectively. Nicholas Hultz competed in three events over the course of the two-day meet, first finishing in sixth place in the high jump (5-08.00). He then finished 15th place in the triple jump (35-01.00), and finally 30th place in the long jump (16-03.75).
Track and field will return to action next Thursday and Friday, when the relay teams take part in the running of the nation's oldest and largest relay carnival, the Penn Relays.
