Raudabaugh’s Second Auto Mark in 800 Highlights Women’s Track & Field at Paul Kaiser Classic

SU hits five NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying marks on Saturday

4/30/2011 11:58:22 PM

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior Amanda Raudabaugh recorded her second automatic qualifying mark of the season in the 800 and ran on a NCAA provisional qualifying 4x400-meter relay squad on Saturday as the SU women's outdoor track and field team stayed home to compete at the 7th annual Paul Kaiser Classic from Seth Grove Stadium.

Shippensburg hosted as many as 14 other schools on a glorious afternoon for competition after several weeks of less than desirable weather. Among the distinguished guests in attendance on Saturday was the tournament's namesake – Paul Kaiser – who greeted many of the competitors in the infield. Kaiser was a hall of fame coach at Shippensburg University and a 10-year coach at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

The only thing more impressive than the weather on Saturday was the spectacular production from the SU track & field squad. The Raiders produced 53 performances that satisfied the PSAC qualification standards, 38 of which were season PRs.

Raudabaugh was challenged in the 800 by former California (Pa.) runner Clare McSweeney, who famously nipped the SU junior at the finish line in last year's outdoor conference championship meet. Great closing speed in the final 200 meters allowed Raudabaugh to win the race in a season-best 2:08.71, which currently stands as the fourth-fastest time in Division II.

In the last women's race of the day, Raudabaugh got the baton from senior Jamie McCollum and sped through the third leg of the 4x400-meter relay. She handed the baton off to senior Laura Henzy – who closed well to produce a season-best time of 3:48.75 that improves SU's NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Senior Erica Hess, who ran the opening leg of the 4x4 relay, broke 56 seconds for the first time this season to win the individual 400-meter dash. Hess posted a time of 55.95 seconds that ranks her 20th in Division II.

McCollum was close behind Raudabaugh and McSweeney in the 800 and finished third with a time of 2:11.37 – a new season PR and an improvement of her NCAA provisional qualifying status in which she ranks ninth in Division II. Freshman Megan Rhyner moved to 16th in Division II with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 2:12.37.

Senior Emily Dubs had a heck of an afternoon. She paced the 800 runners before dropping out of the race – Dubs impressed in the 1,500 meters earlier in the day by winning with a season PR of 4:36.42 which pits her fourth in Division II behind Raudabaugh, Kutztown's Keri Brown and SU junior Neely Spence.

Shippensburg's sprinters had a strong day. Sophomore Courtney Martin ran a 100-meter dash qualifying time of 12.44 to improve her season PR while fellow sophomore Maisie Aumiller posted season PRs in the 100 and the 200. Freshman Ally Herr also had season PRs in both events and achieved her PSAC qualifier in the 100.

The hurdlers were just as exceptional. All four 110-meter hurdlers posted season PRs, including sophomore Caitlin Stuetz (14.55 seconds in qualifying) and freshman Daniesa Lyles (15.05 seconds). Freshmen Lyndsay Barna and Rachel Haupt achieved PSAC qualifiers with season PRs.

Seven different jumpers achieved season PRs – including senior Rebekah Newhart in the high jump and freshmen Ellie Ressler and Kellie Bresz. Junior Lauren Redington paced the Raiders in the triple jump with a season PR.

Among the other freshmen with great performances included Damaris Schrum, who won the long jump with a season PR, and Cree Banks, who hit season PRs in both the long jump and the triple jump.

At the throws area, freshman Carenna Neely achieved season PRs in the discus and the hammer. Freshmen Ashley Merton and Lauren Merk threw season PRs in the javelin while senior Jillian Weikel picked up her PSAC qualifier. Weikel is a three-time conference placewinner.

After next week's final exams, Shippensburg will compete in the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships from Slippery Rock beginning Thursday, May 12 through Saturday May 14.
