Grantham, Pa. (May 8, 2011) - Junior Brian Nerney (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) took the MAC gold medal in High Jump with a leap of 1.98m, the second place finished jumped 1.93m.  This is the second straight year Nerney has placed in the high jump, as he took the silver medal at the 2010 championships.

Nerney, also a conference champion this year with the Men's Basketball team, has previously qualified to compete in the ECAC Championships in high jump and will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. on May 19th to compete for the ECAC title.  Nerney can still qualify for the NCAAs with a jump of 2.03m (provisional) at the ECAC Championships.  Nerney also competed in the long jump at the MAC Championships and posted an 11th place finish with a jump of 5.98m.

Also recording strong performances for Alvernia were Chynelle Washington who was just out of the finals with a 10th place finish in the 100m.  Washington also competed in the 200m and finished 20th, she re-broke her own school records in the 100m and 200m dashes. Her time in the 100, 13.18,  would have been 4th in 2010.  In the shot put, freshman Amanda Searle (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) finished seventh with a throw of 10.85m and finished sixth in the discus throw with a 32.8m toss.  Fellow thrower Katie Wimberg (Galloway, NJ/Sacred Heart) finished sixth in the hammer throw.

For their efforts, Nerney earns First Team All-MAC, while Searle and Wimberg both pick up Second Team All-MAC honors. Searle's shot put mark and Wimberg's hammer mark, both eclipse the previous school records in those events.  Alvernia women tallied eight points for a tenth place finish, while the men also finished tenth with ten total points.
