SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Shippensburg women's outdoor track and field team opened the weekend at the 2011 PSAC Championships by competing in three events, closing out the night with a strong effort in the 10K by senior
Katie Frey.
Frey, who ran the 10K for the first time at the Paul Kaiser Classic just two weeks ago, finished just short of a place-winning performance. Her ninth-place time of 38:21.60 was just four seconds short of eighth place.
After four events in the heptathlon, sophomore
Sara Wagner is in ninth place with 2,509 points after solid efforts in the high hurdles and the high jump. Junior
Jessica Yates is in 11th place and looking to make a run on the second and final day of the multis.
In the field, freshman
Carenna Neely achieved a new season PR in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.36 meters (136 feet 8 inches) but had to settle for 11th place. Senior
Margaret Merlie finished 14th.
Competition begins Friday with the multis resuming at 10 a.m. Field events begin at noon while the track preliminary qualifiers start at 1:05 p.m.
