Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Wins 2011 PSAC Championship; Achieves Triple Crown, Three-Peat

Raiders place in 19 of 21 events; winning three, and earning overall victory by 63 points

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Shippensburg men's outdoor track and field squad placed in 19 of the 21 contested events at the 2011 PSAC Championships from Slippery Rock to achieve its third consecutive conference title and record the first men's “Triple Crown” in the history of the league.

Shippensburg won three events – the long jump, 4x100-meter relay and the 1,500 meters – and totaled 38 PSAC placewinning performances to earn a 63-point victory over second-place East Stroudsburg. It is the second consecutive year and the fourth time in school history that Shippensburg has won men's and women's outdoor track and field championships in the same season (1984 and 1993).

The 4x100-meter relay squad of sophomore Romarr Mayne, senior Kevin Marshall, freshman Herman Kirkland and freshman Jon Eisemann impressed those assembled with a conference title in 40.90 seconds. The time is a slight improvement on the school record set earlier this season by the quartet at SU's Paul Kaiser Classic.

Individually, Kirkland placed second in the 100 with a time of 10.92 seconds – he was narrowly edged at the line by ESU's Asher Ashfield. Eisemann took fourth in 11.04 seconds and Marshall placed eighth in 12.29 seconds. The effort this weekend of Eisemann should not be lost in the shuffle – in addition to his 100-meter work; he placed fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.29 seconds.

SU once cleaned up in the mid-distance events despite running in a downpour that saturated Bill Lennox Track for the first two hours of Saturday's competition.

Sophomore Matt Gillette won his first outdoor conference title with a victory in 1,500 meters – his signature kick over the final 200 meters allowed him to post a victorious time of 3:55.45. Junior Stephen Schelander made a kick of his own to finish second in 3:56.02 to earn his second All-PSAC performance of the meet. Senior Bryan Beegle placed fifth in 3:57.33.

Sophomore Tom Troxell led a group of three Raiders who placed in the 800. After an impressive qualifying run on Friday, Troxell kept his momentum going Saturday with a third-place time of 1:52.83. Gillette valiantly placed seventh in 1:55.54 – running just over an hour after getting drenched in his 1,500-meter victory. The third sophomore in the triumvirate, Joel Flott, placed eighth.

The rain was at its worse during the 1,500 meters and the 110-meter hurdles – workers had to squeegee the track surface before the start of the hurdles. Junior Tyrek Nelson placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles and sixth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles – he was joined in the latter race by junior Kyle Raguz, who finished seventh.

Three Raiders consecutively placed in the triple jump. Sophomore Elijah Trusty was fourth after a mark of 46 feet 7 ¼ inches. Freshman Chris Thomas was one place behind after leaping 46 feet 4 ¾ inches. Sophomore Kyle Dickinson placed sixth with a mark of 45 feet 7 ¾ inches.

In throws, junior Travis Nye capped off a career weekend with a third-place discus throw of 155 feet 3 inches. Nye earned All-PSAC honors in the hammer and the shot put while placing seventh in the hammer. He recorded PRs in two of those three events. Senior Adam Deiseroth placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 150 feet.

During the light rain of the morning, freshman Adam Phillippi and sophomore Brandon Claypool achieved place-winning performances in the pole vault. Phillippi tied for fourth place by clearing 14 feet 5 ½ inches while Claypool tied for seventh after clearing 13 feet 11 ¾ inches.

Senior Jake Sitler once again excelled in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing third with a time of 9:24.93. It is the first All-PSAC honor for Sitler and the second straight year that he placed among the top five finishers in the steeplechase.

The day concluded with the 4x400-meter relay squad of Troxell, sophomore Mike Treese, senior Todd Phillips and junior Eric Wolfe placing seventh in 3:19.18. Earlier in the day, Wolfe individually placed seventh in the 400 with a time of 50.26 seconds.

More to come.
