Shippensburg matched best-ever finish from a season ago with an equally outstanding year

NEW ORLEANS – For the second consecutive year, the Shippensburg University cross country/track and field program finished fourth in the USTFCCCA Division II Program of the Year standings. SU totaled 29 points to finish behind Western State (3rd), Adams State (2nd) and 2010-11 Program of the Year Grand Valley State.

The Raiders finished fourth in cross country, 11th in indoor track & field and in a tie for 13th in outdoor track & field. Shippensburg and fellow conference institution Kutztown are two of just 10 schools in the nation to earn national finishes in each of the three sports this academic year. The fourth-place ranking for the Raiders matches the best finish in school history that was achieved last season.

The program yielded a total of 10 All-Americans: three in cross country, five indoors and two outdoors. Junior Neely Spence was the cross country national champion and an outdoor 5K national champion. She anchored the indoor DMR squad that also won a national championship. Fellow junior Amanda Raudabaugh ran the third leg on the national championship DMR squad and finished second outdoors in the 800 meters.

The NCAA Division II Program of the Year awards are presented annually to the most outstanding men's and women's cross country/track & field program. The awards honor the institution that achieves the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on its finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Division II Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
