CLEVELAND, Ohio – Despite oppressively muggy conditions, the Allegheny women's cross country team opened the campaign with a second-place effort at the 2011 Bill Sudeck Invitational at the Case Western Reserve University Farm. Sophomore
Kristina Martin delivered a strong statement in her first official race of the season after breaking the tape en route to the individual title.
Martin split 15:50.50 to post a 17-second victory on runner-up Natalie Cabrera of Case. Freshman
Andy Sharfman closed fifth overall in 16:44.55, but a 2-3-4 effort by the host Spartans fueled their team victory.
Amber Wetzel closed ninth overall in 17:26.97, while
Kelly Gallagher completed the 4k circuit in 17:28.55 en route to 10th.
“It was so hot during the women's race,” said head coach
Brent Wilkerson. “It's hard to gauge our performance because we haven't trained in conditions like we faced today. Kristina had a great race, and I thought our team performed well given the extreme weather.”
Sara Mitrano authored the final scoring spot for the Gators after crossing the line 13th overall in 17:59.68.
Allegheny finished with 37 points to finished second behind Case (22) in the team standings, but substantially ahead of Cuyahoga Community College (88) and Ursuline (93).
