BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 19-ranked Shippensburg University men's cross country team received strong lead performances from senior #Stephen Schelander# and junior #Matt Gillette# on Friday morning in addition to having its No. 3 through No. 5 runners set collegiate PRs in the 8K gold race at the Paul Short Run presented by Brooks.

Schelander, as SU's top runner, navigated Lehigh's Goodman Campus Course to finish 85th overall with a time of 25:27. Gillette was the No. 2 runner for the Raiders and placed just outside the Top 100 with a time of 25:32.

The key to Shippensburg's success on Friday was receiving PRs from its other scoring runners. SU's No. 3 runner in the race was redshirt freshman #Scott Armstrong#, who posted a time of 26:47. Given the green light this weekend along with the rest of his teammates, Armstrong improved 56 seconds from his race two weeks ago at Kutztown.

Senior #Wade Miller# posted an 8K PR of 26:52 as Shippensburg's No. 4 runner. It is a 34-second improvement from his effort at Kutztown and a 37-second improvement from his collegiate PR with the Raiders entering the season.

Freshman #Bernard England# impressed as the No. 5 runner, crossing the finish line in 27:11. It is a new collegiate PR by 48 seconds for England, who is just three races into his collegiate career.

Senior #Eric Evans# rounded out the SU scorers in the Gold Race with a time of 27:21.

Shippensburg also had nine runners compete in the men's open race conducted earlier in the morning. Freshman #Peter Gelston# led the SU contingent with a time of 27:19 that would have resulted in a scoring performance for the Raiders had he been in the Gold Race.

Friday's field was laden with some of the best teams in Division I, including eight teams ranked among the Top 25 in the country. Shippensburg placed 33rd overall, ahead of Division I squads from Penn, Richmond, Tennessee, Bucknell, Vermont and Temple.

Lock Haven, ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region and No. 13 in the nation, did not employ its top runners in the Gold Race and finished 39th overall.

Kutztown, ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region, was scheduled to run in the White Race during the afternoon.

Shippensburg will next compete as a team October 15 at Gettysburg.
