LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Senior cross country runner
Stephen Schelander was named Friday morning to the 2011-12 PSAC Fall Top 10 squad. Schelander, a sociology major with a 3.80 cumulative GPA, was one of two Shippensburg honorees along with senior cross country runner Neely Spence.
Schelander served as Shippensburg's No. 1 runner in all six of his races this season as a senior cross country competitor, including three in the postseason. The Raiders finished second at PSACs and third at NCAA regionals, resulting in the team's third-straight appearance at the NCAA national championships.
Schelander earned All-PSAC accolades for the third time in his career by finishing third at the 2011 PSAC Cross Country Championships with an 8K PR of 24:37. He also earned his third career USTFCCCA All-Region designation after placing third at the 2011 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships with a third-place finish and by matching his 10K PR of 31:53.
At the NCAA national championships, Schelander finished one spot short of achieving All-America honors by finishing in 41st place.
Friday's award is the second of Schelander's career. He also received a 2010-11 PSAC Spring Top award for men's outdoor track & field.
With its two honorees, Shippensburg maintains the lead among league institutions with 49 career recipients of the PSAC Top 10 award. Clarion has 41 all-time honorees while Slippery Rock boasts 39. Edinboro, East Stroudsburg and IUP have totaled 38 award winners.
It is also the ninth consecutive competitive season that Shippensburg has had a PSAC Top 10 award winner.
The PSAC Top 10 awards were first granted in the fall of 1997.
