The opening weekend of February produced some good performances as teams get themselves ready for the stretch run that leads to Penn State and in the indoor championships on February 25.
So far there has been one state record set, and this past weekend we were three tenths of a second from a 2nd record. Penn Wood competed in the 4x400 meter relay at the New Balance Collegiate Invite and ran 3:17.06 to finish 2nd in the race, US#2, and PA#2 All Time behind last year's Abington sqaud that ran 3:16.76 at the same meet. At the same invitational, Penncrest became the first 4x800 meter relay team to break 8 minutes this season, running 7:55.57 for US#9 honors! Seneca Valley ran a PA#6 time of 1:31.60 in the 4x200 meter relay to become the first Western PA team to crack the top 8 this season. West Chester Henderson closed the gap between themselves and state leading Great Valley in the distance medley relay, running 10:35.1 for PA#3 honors. North Allegheny ran a PA#7 10:44.24 to become the top Western PA squad in the event.
In open running events, Brandon Shippen moved up the state list in two events this week, running 6.4 in the 55 meter dash for PA#6 and 22.4 for PA#8 honors in the 200 meter dash. Matt Smalley of Father Judge moved to PA#2 in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.54 at the Lawrenceville Poreda Invitational, while Corey Hackett of Hatboro Horsham ran a PA#4 time of 6.62 to win the Glen Mills Invite. Maxmilian Hairston of Wissahickon ran a PA#3 time of 7.62 in the 55 meter hurdles to close the gap of Wellington Zaza in the event. In the distance events, two more sub nine minute performances were recorded in the 3000 meter run, as Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill (PA#3 8:54.83) and Andrew Kutcha of Baldwin (PA#4 8:57.43) finished 1-2 at TSTCA #3 on Saturday. Sam Aziz of Germantown Friends ran 9:28.7 for 3200 meters to become the state leader in that event. Wil Bailey of Penn Hills cracked the top 8 in the 800 meter run with a PA#5 time of 1:57.43 at the same meet. Tony Russell of West Chester Henderson ran an impressive 1600 meter run with a time of 4:21.8, which converts to PA#4 in the mile (4:23.32).
In the field events, John Mudrey of Hickory cleared 6-7 in the high jump for the 2nd week in a row, while Darnae Clemons of Indiana Area became the 4th high jumper to clear 6-5 this season. Matt Bell of Hickory won the shot put at TSTCA #3 with a PA#3 mark of 59-4.25. The top three throwers are separated by .75 inches, and 4.5 inches from 1-4. Three of the top four will be competing at the PTFCA Carnival on Saturday, which could provide a nice preview before states in two and a half weeks. John Landis of Father Judge moved up to PA#4 in the triple jump with a mark of 46-8 at the Poreda Invitational. Jesse Laverdiere of Laurel Highlands cleared 14-9 in the pole vault for PA#6 honors.
