We have entered the final week for teams and individuals to earn state qualifying marks before the indoor state championships on February 25. But before we enter the final weekend, this past weekend provided some great highlights and some of the contenders you will see at Penn State had impressive performances.
The biggest double of the weekend came from TJ Elliott of Central Dauphin East. At the PTFCA Indoor Carnival, Elliott ran two state leading performances and one national top ten performance. His time of 6.88 in the 60 meter dash improved his state lead by almost a full tenth of a second and tied him for US#7 honors! Elliott then ran a new state leading time of 22.15 to win the 200 meter dash, putting himself in a strong position for the state meet. Niager Mathis of Swenson stayed close to Elliott in the 60 meter dash with his PA#2 time of 6.94, and a PA#3 time of 22.30 in the 200 meter dash. There's a new top three in the 400 meter dash, as Tyler Ross of Greater Latrobe ran 49.04 to take over the state lead at the SPIRE Invite in Ohio! Johnathan Stiles of Penn Wood won the PTFCA Carnival in a PA#2 49.87, and Oliver Philogene of Seneca Valley finished behing Ross in Ohio with a PA#3 time of 49.89. Aaron Willett of Coatesville finished 2nd in the 60 meter hurdles behind current US leader Chris Williams with a US#4 mark of 7.99! Todd Townsend of West Catholic cracked the top five with a PCL meet record and PA#5 time of 8.23.
In distance action, Tom Coyle and Andrew Stone of Lasalle ran an impressive mile race at the PCL Championships! Coyle ran the fastest mile on a flat track this season with a PA#2 time of 4:21.98 while Stone finished 2nd in a PA#8 time of 4:24.95. Coyle also won the 3000 meter run with a meet record and PA#4 time of 8:55.55. Jack Macauley of North Penn (PA#5 8:56.38) and Dan Savage of Cardinal O'Hara (PA#6 8:56.88) also ran state qualifying marks in the 3000. Strath Haven regained the state lead in the 4x800 meter relay with a US#9 time of 7:54.31, while Germantown Friends cracked the top 8 in the distance medley relay with a PA#7 time of 10:42.87.
In field event action, it was a career week for Kyle Felpel of Cocalico! On Wednesday night at the Albright HS Invitational, he broke the 60 foot barrier in the shot put for the very first time with a mark of 60-1.25. 3 days later at the PTFCA Carnival, he added over two and a half feet to that mark, throwing a US#4 mark of 62-8.75! Max Adams of Hempfield cracked the top five in the shot put with a mark of 56-2. Five of the top six marks in the long jump were from the past week, with Cody Minnig of Neshaminy becoming the state leader in the event with a mark of 23-8 of Friday night at the TFCAofGP Last Chance Meet. John Landis of Father Judge won the PCL Championship with a PA#2 mark of 23-1, and Imani Brown of Reading won the PTFCA Carnival with a PA#3 mark of 22-8. Landis also had a PA#2 mark in the triple jump with his winning mark of 47-10.25. Both Ibn Short of Milton Hershey and Jalen Ramsey of Norristown cleared 6-6 in the high jump at the PTFCA Carnival for PA#3 honors. Finally, in the pole vault, Chris Williams of Strath Haven was at it again, clearing his 3rd indoor personal best mark this season with a US#9 mark of 15-9 at the Carnival! Patrick Anderson of Kane Area (PA#2 15-7) and Jared Allison of Dallastown (PA#3 15-6) managed to stay close to the state leader.
