Grinnell, Iowa (Mar. 9, 2012) - Junior pole vaulter
Melissa Fellenbaum (Mount Joy, Pa./Hempfield) made the most of Alvernia University's first ever appearance in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships finishing tied for ninth in the women's pole vault Friday.
Fellenbaum cleared the first two heights of the meet, 3.45m and 3.60m on her first attempts. Three of the 15 competitors to start the meet were knocked out after 3.60 and the bar was moved up to 3.75m. Fellenbaum could have established a new personal and school record if she could have cleared that height, but she couldn't get over the bar cleanly on three attempts. She holds the school record at 3.70m.
Linfield senior Catherine Street, the top seed entering the Championships, needed her third and final attempt to clear the bar at 4.00m and stay in the meet. She also cleared 4.05m and 4.10m to win the event when defending national champion, Moravian senior Abigail Schaffer couldn't clear 4.10m.
Fellenbaum and the Crusaders hope to build on the indoor momentum when the outdoor schedule starts March 24 at Widener.
