The sprints were full of state leading performances, led by an impressive 10.61 100 meter dash performance from Monty Szukics of Palmerton. Twelve different boys have 100 meter performances under 11 seconds through the first four weeks of the season. Szukics also took the state lead in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.80 to complete his dominance at the Olympian Invitational. Jimmy Brooks of Wilson (3) held on to his state lead in the 400 meter dash, but now he has company. Indoor 800 meter champion Haneef Hardy of Swenson ran 49.01 to win the Viking Invite, while PA#3 Cornell Dixon of Wissahickon ran 49.03 to win at Coatesville. In the 4x100 meter relay, four team overtook previous state leader Milton Hershey. Central York now holds that distinction with a Pan Ram winning time of 42.79. Swenson is 2nd, a tenth of a second back. Penn Wood regained their top spot in the 4x400 meter relay, edging out Coatesville and Wissahickon with a time of 3:21.74. In the hurdles, Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven moved up to PA#3 in the high hurdles with a time of 14.24 and he recorded a PA#2 time of 38.18 in the intermediate hurdles.
Drew Magaha of Upper Moreland showed another glimpse of his 2011 outdoor form, running a blazing US#8 time of 1:51.74 to win the 800 meters at Coatesville. Previous state #2 Austin Kohler of Pennridge did his best to stay with him, but ran a lifetime best of 1:54.88 to earn PA#3 honors. The top six in the 1600 meter run is completely different from last week, with four of the performances breaking the 4:20 mark. When the weekend was over, Ryan Smathers of North East grabbed the state lead over Dustin Wilson of Chestnut Hill Academy by two tenths of a second (4:17.23 to 4:17.44). Mac Emrey of Council Rock North broke away from the chase back that trails Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill in the 3200 meter run. His 9:26.73 win at the Bensalem Invitational put him to PA#2 by two seconds over the rest of the chase pack. Three more 4x800 meter relay teams broke 8 minutes over the weekend, with Cumberland Valley taking the state lead from Lasalle with their Pan Ram Invite winning time of 7:58.06. Nine teams are under 8:05 after four weeks of the season. Strath Haven ran a US#8 time of 10:14.18 to win the distance medley relay at Coatesville.
The throws continue to show their depth in the state, especially in the javelin. Outside of the state leading performance of Billy Stanley of South Park, PA#s 2-9 were all from this weekend, including three more 200 foot plus marks. Michael Shuey led the way with a US#3 mark of 212-3, one inch behind Stanley. PA has three javelin throwers in the top five in the nation, and four in the top six! Not to be overshadowed by the javelin dominance, Kyle Felpel of Cocalico earned a lifetime best mark in the shot put with a state leading and US#6 mark of 63-3! Discus leader Kyle Long of Hempfield (PA#2 59-6) and Matt Bell of Hickory (PA#3 57-1.50) cracked the top three this week. Felpel also added a PA#2 mark of 180 feet even in the discus, another lifetime best. In the jumps, SIX different boys cleared 6-6 in the high jump over the weekend. PA now has twelve high jumpers at 6-6 or better. Ibn Short of Milton Hershey still leads with a clearance of 6-9, but the depth in the event is the best PA has seen in awhile. National indoor triple jump champion Imani Brown of Reading took the state lead in the event with a US#6 mark of 49-3.25, while Joe Oduho of Cathedral Prep became PA's first 23 foot long jumper this spring with his Butler Invite win of 23 feet even.
