MileSplit Scholastic Showcase @ Spire - A Preview

Rachel Banks of Chardon and Brittany Aveni of Geneva will go head to head in the 800m again Saturday. Just last week at Spire, OH #1 Aveni out lasted Banks as the two ran 2:14.00 and 2:14.80.  Outdoors last year at the State meet, Banks outlasted Aveni with a 2:07.27 to Aveni's 2:07.48.

Girls

The girl's meet does not boast a US #1, but almost every event is loaded and extremely competitive.  Here is a look at some of the events.

60m

Abby Steiner of Dublin Coffman comes in OH #1 with a 7.57.  OH #'s 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10 are also in the 60. Warren G. Harding's Justice Richardson is #2 (7.58), Lakota East's Kaylyn Heat #3 (7.70), Brittni Mason of West Geauga in #4 (7.71), #6 is Shae Douglas of Pickerington Central (7.82), #7 is Amariah Thomas of Gahanna Lincoln (7.84), #8 is Beachwood's Mia Knight (7.86) and Gahanna Lincoln's MiAngel Daniels and Twinsburg's Emmarie Foote are at #10 with 7.90's.

200m

Nine girls come in with verified times under 25.  Lanae-Tava Thomas has run 24.17, Jewel Davis of the Michigan All Stars has run 24.68, the Speed Adademy's Xahria Santiago has gon 24.69.  On the Ohio side, Stiener and Richardson are OH #1 and 2 with 24.40 and 24.88 respectively.  OH #3 is Brittni Mason of West Geauga (25.68), OH #4 is Shae Douglas of Pickerington Central (25.73) and #5 is Emmarie Foote of Twinsburg (25.76).  This should be a great test of just how good our Ohio girls are.

400m

On the 300m track we should see some fast 400's.  The highest seed is right at 58.  It will probably take under 58 to place in the top 5.  The lowest is a 55.86 by Jewel Davis of the Michigan All Stares.  Taylor Manson of the Motor City Track Club has run 56.05.    Ohio's highest seeded girl with 2016 indoor times is OH #4 Jaydan Wood of Pickerington Central (58.57).

800m

This is set up to be one of the best races of the evening.  OH #1 and 2 will battle each other again.  Just last week, #1 Brittany Aveni of Geneva out lasted the D1 OHSAA 2015 State champion Rachel Banks of Chardon. Aveni ran 2:14.00 and Banks 2:14.80.  Outdoors last year at the State meet, Banks outlasted Aveni with a 2:07.27 to Aveni's 2:07.48.  Other Ohio girls to watch are #3 Annie Ubbing of Magnificat, Sandy Valley's Andra Lehotay, Granville's Micaela DeGenero - who has the States #2 1,600 at this time (5:07.86), Centerville's lainey Studebaker and Gahanna Lincoln's Shynae Deas.

1,600m

Lainey Studebaker of Centerville is the defending champion with a 5:01.23.  To defend, she will have to go under 5:00.  Maybe under 4:55.  There is a ton of talent in this race.  Madeleine Davison of North Allegheny (PA) has run 4:51.56.  Lexa Barrott of Northville (MI) has run 4:55.67.  Sam Peterman of Sweet Home (NY) has run 5:02.32.  Claire Brown of Villa Maria Academy (PA) has gone 5:03.3.  As for Ohio girls indoor at this time, OH #1 is Athena Welch of St. Thomas Aquinas (5:05.44), #3 is India Johnson of Dilliard Davidson (5:09.05).  #4 is Dominique Clarimonte of Lexington (5:11.17).

3,200m

11 girls have run under 11:00 before.  This race may depend on if Lexa Barrott of Northville (MI) doubles in the 1,600.  If fresh, she has run 10:37.52.  Top seed however is that of Natalie Verschoor of Brantford, Ontario (CAN).  Verschoor has run 10:25.  Ohio girls to watch for are Centerville's Kelli Walsh who ran OH #2 last weekend with an 11:18.27, Ashley Rulison of Beaumont OH #3 (11:18.81) and Louiza Wise of Solon, OH #4 (11:20.13).
