Team Breakdown: PIAA District 3 Boys

D3-AA Boys - Team Breakdown

There were a lot of orange tops crossing the line in rapid succession at Big Spring last fall, as the York Suburban dominated the field in District 3 AA to win by 53 points over second place. Six of seven from varsity returns for YS, which will likely be led up front by Bryce Ohl and Jarrett Raudensky.

And while Wyomissing Area should give a good run to York Suburban at districts, York Suburban will also be looking to return to the top of the podium at the state meet. After bringing home gold in the team race in 2014, YS has been second to District 2's Dallas each of the last two years. This is a senior-heavy squad, hungry to get a state crown this fall. In addition to Ohl, Josh Kerr, Tanner Haynes, and Scott Curry are seniors that would like to bookend their careers with state titles.

But as we mentioned, Wyomissing won't be an easy team to get by in the district. Team leader Joe Cullen was the individual champion in D3-AA last fall, and he'll be favored to repeat after a strong spring. After that, Wyo will rely on some younger runners in sophomores Ben Kuhn and Thomas Foster and juniors Ryan Vargo and Josh Diehl. With some improvements, Wyomissing could certainly lower that 53 point gap from 2016 between them and YS.

Milton Hershey earned that third and final state qualifying spot at districts last year, and it brings back five to the fray this season. Rafael Mendez and Luis Guyton-Acevedo were the top runners last year and they'll look do the same this fall.

After those top three, there's a bunch of teams that will look to improve and challenge for one of the state qualifying spots. There's plenty of sleeper potential here. Trinty and Greencastle-Antrim were fourth and fifth in the district last year, respectively. Both lose some seniors to graduation, but have some good young runners with the ability to step up.

Big Spring, Gettysburg Area, and Boiling Springs are on the outside looking in for now, but could certainly be in the conversation come October.
