Boys' 400 Meters Preview
Something that has evaded Miles Green his entire career has been a state title. The Saint Joseph's Prep senior and Virginia Tech recruit's name has been a mainstay near the top of state rankings in a variety of events for years now, but on Sunday he'll look to earn himself his first state crown.
Green enters as the top seed with a season best of 48.26, just off his indoor PR from last year's state meet. It was last year that Green was out-leaned by Shanahan's Nate Alleyne at the line for the win. Surely, he has a ton of motivation and will be on the hunt for the win.
The only other sub-49er in the field is Bishop Shanahan's Rick Zink, one of this season's breakthrough performers. After battling injury last year, Zink has become serious title threat in his senior season, and he'll try and steal the show from Green. Another breakthrough athlete in the quarter mile has been Kai Cummings of Germantown Friends, who dropped a 49.20 for second at Yale earlier this season. Don't count out the rising Cummings in this field.
William Gruber of Hickory figures to be strong in this field as well. He went 49.49 and 49.47 in consecutive weeks. The consistency is there and he could make some moves Sunday. Others to keep an eye on include Riverside's Calvin Wetzel, Cumberland Valley's Chase Ebersole, Council Rock North's Michael Welde, Saint Joseph's Prep's Salim Epps, and Westtown's Julian Klenner. Welde was fourth last season and will look to use that experience.
