Saint Marys Area left no doubt about it last season, putting its top five runners inside the top six of the District 9 Class AA Championship. The individual district champ, Amanda Foster, has graduated, but five others from Saint Marys' 2017 squad are back this season.
Megan Quesenberry, Tessa Grotzinger, Brianna Grotzinger, Amber Schauer, and Lucy Anthony are make up the returners from the Saint Marys varsity squad from a year ago. It will be difficult for any other teams in the district to challenge the defending D9-AA champs for the lone state qualifying spot.
Bradford Area and Clearfield Area were seperated by just 5 points last year for second place. Expect a similar battle again this season. Bradford, second last year, return four girls, led by Hannah Lary, fresh off a strong ninth grade season. Clearfield also returns four girls. Abby LaBorde's seventh place finish led the way for them last season.
Punxsutawney Area will look to get in the mix for a high finish this fall, too. Ultimately, everyone will be chasing Saint Marys, which is in pursuit of its third straight district crown.
