Region IV 5A-6A Recap

6A Girls

After Friday's results, it looked like there might be a possibility that Reagan would not win a sixth straight Regional title. In the prelims, they finished in sixth in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays. If they had kept those same places, they would have finished in third place behind Judson and Harlan. However, tales of the demise of the Rattlers were greatly exaggerated. In the 4x100m, Nnenna Opara received the baton in third place and ran down Westwood to win in 47.34. Kiana Douglas, Romina Reyes, and Katie Burnett joined her on the medal stand. In the 4x200m, Burnett, Reyes and Opara were joined by Mackenzie Dagrosa who ran the anchor leg and crossed the line in 1:39.21 to finish ahead of Harlan who posted a season best time of 1:40.00. The 40 points in the two relays helped give Reagan a dominant team victory.

The 6A girls meet opened with Edinburg North's San Juanita Leal winning the first of her three titles in the meet. She ran away with the win in the 3200m covering the distance in 10:23.92 while Vista Ridge's Emma Wade was runner-up in 10:44.84. San Antonio runners took the next four spots with Brooklyn Crow (Taft), Jade Perez (Clark), Araceli Ford (O'Connor) and Kassia Kozarski (Steele) all running between 11:05 and 11:15.

In the 800m, Leal outraced Faith Murphy of Austin Anderson and Caila Lyons of Brennan. Leal never let down and finished in a meet record time of 2:08.64 while Murphy was runner-up in 2:09.24 and Lyons finished in 2:12.30. Leal nearly nabbed another meet record in the 1600m with her winning time of 4:46.57, less than a second off the record. Wade took runner-up honors again with a quality time of 4:54.86 while New Braunfels freshman Savanah Moya finished in third place.

The first round of Friday field events included the high jump, long jump and discus. Dagrosa kept up her dominant season in the high jump as she won her third straight Regional title with a clearance of 5-8. Vandegrift freshman Keona Benford was runner-up with a 5-7 clearance while Dagrosa's teammate, Aryiel Sherman, finished in third with a height of 5-6.

The long jump featured seven athletes who went past 18-0. Harlan's Iyanna Webb had a consistent jumping series going over 18-feet in each of her first three jumps and then she went past 19-feet in each of her final three jumps, including a winning mark of 19-8.75. Westwood's Kenzie McElroy finished in second with a jump of 18-10.25 while Steele's Justice Boston was third with a leap of 18-5.25. Webb added another victory in the triple jump with a top mark of 41-10.75 which set a new meet record. Boston took second with her first attempt of 39-9.25. There was a little drama for Webb who fouled each of her first two attempts.

The discus was dominated by Harlingen's Jazmine Thompson who won by over 30-feet with her throw of 155-10. Thompson also took gold in the shot put with a heave of 45-10.75. In the discus, Laredo United's Liana Moncivais and Janelle Valdez took second and third, respectively. Naomi Ofunrein of Stony Point took second in the shot put.

The final field event of the day was the pole vault. Johnson's Taylor Fuentespina and Lily Peters of Lake Travis were each perfect through 11-6 and it looked like the might both advance to the State meet. Fuentespina stayed in first when she cleared 11-9 on her first attempt. At 12-0, the script flipped when Stony Point's Aubrey Griffin and Summer Wheeler of Lake Travis each cleared on their second attempts and Fuentespina and Peters went out. Griffin ended up taking the victory due to less misses.

Reagan's Isabella Dagrosa swept both the 100mH and 300mH for a second straight year and is headed to the State meet in both events for a third straight year. She shot out of the blocks in the 100mH and won in 13.91 while Webb took second place in 14.33. In the 300mH, she posted a winning time of 42.42 after breaking her own city and meet records on Friday with her prelim time of 41.57. Laredo United's Camila Gutierrez grabbed second place in a time of 43.26 while Herminia Corado of Economedes was third in 43.67.

In the 100m, Kelly Ufodiama of Cedar Ridge pulled away to win the race in 11.63 while Westlake's Emily Royce finished second in 11.93. In the 200m, Ufodiama finished second in 23.71 while Royce was third in 23.90. The winner of the 200m was one of the stars of the meet, Harlingen's Faith Franklin who won in 23.61. Franklin also won the 400m in a meet record time of 53.15 which she ran in both the prelims and finals. Jay's Shyniece Davis held off Lyons down the stretch to take second place in the 400m in 55.38 while Lyons crossed in 55.87.

In the final event of the day, Judson took gold in the 4x400m. The quartet of Jenesis Cordero, Jada Arkadie, Julianna Dodson and Kinsey Jackson won in 3:51.81 finishing a hair in front of Round Rock who crossed in 3:51.91.

Reagan finished with 83 points while Judson was second with 50 and Harlan was third with 48.
