NEW ORLEANS – Syracuse senior Jarret Eaton, the 2012 BIG EAST Champion in the men's 60-meter hurdles, was named the United States Track & Field and Coaches Association Northeast Men's Track Athlete of the Year on Monday. Eaton owns the nation's fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles, and will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship this weekend in Nampa, Idaho.

"So far, Jarret is on pace to have the finest season ever by a Syracuse track athlete," head coach Chris Fox said.

Eaton's time of 7.49 seconds, which he ran at the Penn State National Invitational on January 27, is the second fastest time ever recorded for a collegiate runner in the event. The Abington, Pa. native has been named the BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week twice this season, and was added to the Bowerman Award Watch List on February 1. The Bowerman Award recognizes the nation's top male and female track & field athletes.

"We're very proud of Jarret and everything he's accomplished thus far," said assistant coach Dave Hegland, who works with the sprinters and hurdlers. "This award is a testament to the work he's put in over a number of years. He has been and continues to be very diligent in his approach to the sport. We look forward to his continued success during the rest of the indoor and outdoor seasons."

Eaton has finished first in every race he has competed in during the indoor season, and has broken his own 60-meter hurdle record twice this season. His time of 7.49 seconds is the fifth fastest time in the world this season. He earned an automatic bid into this weekend's NCAA Championship, and at-large selections will be determined by 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening.
