Future Stars Spotlight: Brooke Hutton

As part of the Hoka One Future Stars program, MileSplit is highlighting some of the top underclass cross country runners throughout the country. Our next profile will feature freshman Brooke Hutton of Coatesville. Brooke has been on one of PA's best winning streaks for a freshman, having won four straight races after starting the season with a runner up finish. Hutton talks to us about her quick rise and what she hopes to achieve in the weeks ahead.

Tell us how you got started with competitive running.

I began running in 4th grade with the CYO Track and Field for Pope John Paul II.  Track lead me into Cross Country where I fell in love with distance running.  Cross Country is by far my favorite event, and I run track in the off season to stay in shape.

What were some of your goals heading into this season?

I had no idea what to expect coming into the season.  In the back of my mind I always wanted to have a shot at running in the State meet.  It was my intention to stay with the pack, and try to finish every race in the top 10.  I had anticipated this would be a learning year for me, so I tried to keep my expectations in line with what I saw from other freshman performances from prior years on PennTrack.

What did the coaches expect from you this season?

Coaches expected me to come in and work hard.  When the PIAA practice season started in August they pushed me hard physically and mentally, and expected me to perform.

How nervous were you for your first race? What did you want to accomplish?

My first real race was the Big Valley Invitational.  I was a wreck.  I was excited, nervous, and had no idea what to expect.  I had a second place finish and felt more confident after that.  It was my first real High School race, and I will never forget it.

Talk about the one race that gave you the belief that you could be really good this season.

It was Kutztown.  I was on the starting line, and looked at all the girls around me.  It was overwhelming.  It was not until the second mile that I said to myself, “I can win this”.  When I won at Kutztown something clicked, and I realized that I had a chance of having a good freshman season.

How have you gotten along with your older teammates as you have moved up the ranks of the team?

My team is phenomenal!!!!  Both the girls and the guys.  The girls are very supportive, and really make running and practices fun.  The guys are there for me every race cheering me on, and pushing me to run harder.  I would not be having the season I am without the support of the Coatesville XC Team.

How have your goals changed going into the upcoming big meets?

In the beginning I just wanted to finish in the top 10.  Now I just want to win.  I realize that the competition only gets stronger from here, and I know my streak will probably end, but as we move forward I want to run faster times, and make it to States.

Has running become your favorite sport? Why or why not?

Running has always been my favorite sport.  I tried soccer, and failed miserably.  Everything always came back to running.  I love it, and the sense of accomplishment I get after races and workouts make me want to run more.

Which course has been your favorite to run? Least favorite?

My favorite course was Carlisle.  It was a great cross between flats and hills, and complimented my running style nicely.  I don’t think I have a least favorite.  Every course has its own set of challenges, and it really brings strategy into play.  A big part of running is mental.  I have to approach every course as a challenge.  I can’t let a course beat me.

What are you most excited about going forward as a runner?

I am looking forward to running Districts, and hopefully States.  I am new to running at this level, and just want as much experience as I can get in my freshman year to build on for the future.
