Saturday District Recap: Clahane wins 4th title! Hockenbury dominates D2!

District 3

Girls

Class AAA

For the 4th year in a row, Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley was crowned queen of the district with a clean sweep of district titles, winning this race in 17:55 to beat out Alison Willingmyre of Wilson and Abby Yourkavitch of Chambersburg.


Unfortunately, her team could not ride her wave of success, as the Carlisle Invitational champions finished 5th and missed out on state meet qualification. Willingmyre's Wilson team had two top ten finishers and five in the top 35 to win the district title with 105 points. Places 2nd and 3rd went to the two best 1-5 spreads in the meet. Manheim Township had a 28 second spread to finish 2nd with 135 points. Carlisle was 3rd with 192 points with a 40 second spread. The 4th and final state berth went to Chambersbug with 194 points with three top 20 finishers.

Class AA

Maddie Ferner of Kennard-Dale fought off Rebecca Snyder of Oley Valley by 3 seconds and Maddie McLain of Eastern York by 5 seconds to win the district title 19:07 to 19:10 to 19:12.

Donegal ran away with the district title with a score of 88 points thanks to a 62 second spread and five top 30 finishers. Places 2-4 were separated by only 8 points for the other two state qualifying spots. Bishop McDevitt had two top ten finishers and three top 30 finishers to score 157 points for 2nd. The last state spot went to Boiling Springs with five top 50 finishers and one top ten finisher to score 160 points to hold off Northern by 5 points.

Class A

Jordan Haberstroh of Columbia took the entire Class A field to school with a one minute victory in 19:15. Defending champion Leigha Martin of Veritas Academy finished 4th, but she led her team to the district title and a trip to states with four top ten team finishers and 40 points to win by 8 over Delone Catholic.

Boys

Class AAA

Nathan Henderson of JP McCaskey made a case for a serious state title run next weekend with a comfortable district championship win in a new lifetime best 15:38 to defeat Zach Lefever of Ephrata by 14 seconds. Justin Yurchak of Hempfield (3) was 3rd in 15:57.


Yurchak's Hempfield team continued their winning ways, securing the district championship with 141 points with a 55 second spread to win by 26 points over Cumberland Valley and their 48 second spread. Carlisle finished 3rd with 211 points with Matt Wisner finishing 6th. Wilson took the final state spot with 216 points despite having their number 5 runner finish in the 80s.

Class AA

Dan Filler of Gettysburg gave Jack DiCintio of Wyomissing a run for his money, and it took Dicintio breaking the 16 minute mark to end Filler's winning streak. DiCintio ran 15:59 to record a 6 second victory over Filler. Sam Signor of East Pennsboro ran 16:08 for 3rd.

The state champions York Suburban were excellent in their district title defense, scoring 45 points to win by 120 points with five top 15 finishers and a 53 second spread. Trinity finished 2nd and Boiling Springs finished 3rd, five points ahead of 4th place East Pennsboro to take the final state qualifying spot.

Class A

Camp Hill dominated once again to retain their district title thanks to having four of the top six finishers, led by district champion Cooper Leslie (16:21). The team had five in the top ten to score 24 points and win by 46 over Tulpehocken.

District 2

Girls

Class AAA

Tara Johnson of Pittston ran 19:21 to win the district title by 27 seconds over Alyssa Lafave of Wallenpaupack. Johnson's efforts were not enough to boost her team to the district title and a trip to states, as her team fell 54-60 to Hazleton Area. The winners had four in the top fifteen to secure the victory.

Class AA

Ally Rome of Dallas separated herself from the brave challengers in her district by winning the individual title by just under 30 seconds with a run of 18:29. Erin Feeney of Scranton Prep finished 2nd in 18:58, and Katie Dammer of Abington Heights finished 3rd in 19:16. Dammer's performance did inspire her team to a district championship, using a 72 second spread to score 45 points to defeat fellow state qualifiers Dallas by 21.


Class A

The Holy Cross and Elk Lake rivalry wrote another chapter and it was a tense affair, with very little separating the teams. Both teams had their top four runners finish in the top 9 overall, separated by just one point. But Holy Cross had the superior 5th runner and that earned them the team championship over Elk Lake 29-34. Champion Lexi Walsh (19:42) and Mackenzie Greenfield (19:57) led the way for Holy Cross.

Boys

Class AAA

Matt Houser of Hazleton survived the challenge of Tyler Holcomb of Williamsport to win the district title by 4 seconds, 17:09 to 17:13. The team title went to Wallenpaupack, who had a 50 second spread and five top 15 finishers to score 45 points to win by 14 points over Hazleton.

Class AA

State champion Dominic Hockenbury of Lake Lehman kept his undefeated streak alive with a big district title defense. Hockenbury ran 15:47 to win by 26 seconds over Matt Kravitz of North Pocono. Defending team district champions Dallas kept their hot streak going, using a 62 second spread and three top eight finishers to score 69 points to win by 28 over Berwick.


Class A

Will Davies of Riverside secured a 30 second victory to become district champion over Matt Murray of Dunmore with a time of 17:14. Elk Lake were crowned team champions, using a 58 second spread to score 40 points to defeat Holy Cross by 36.

District 6

Girls

Class AAA

Catherine Curtin of State College emerged as the district champion with a time of 19:05 to edge out a 4 second victory over teammate Sarah Almarzooqi. Only a 5th place finish from Kayla Rosas of Altoona stopped State College from securing a perfect score. They had to settle for 19 points to go with their district title.

Class AA

Jane Woy of Somerset had a huge race and emerged as district champion with a time of 18:56 to win by 11 seconds over freshman Emily Montag of Forest Hills. Woy's performance was also part of a convincing victory for her Somerset team, as they placed five in the top 11 overall to score 26 points and win the team title by 14 points over Forest Hills.

Class A

Freshman Sara Mazza of St Joseph's Catholic Academy won the district championship on her first attempt to surprise the field, running 18:39 to win by 10 seconds over Rebecca Bierly of Penns Valley. State champions Central Cambria had a 59 second spread and five top 12 finishers to retain their district title with a score of 24 points to defeat St Joseph's Catholic Acaemy by 15.

Boys

Class AAA

Alex Milligan of State College retained his district championship, running 15:46 to win by 15 seconds over teammate Nick Feffer. The team retained their district title with a score of 20 points with a 60 second spread to defeat rivals Altoona by 23.

Class AA

Will Kachman of Bedford was victorious once again at the district meet, running a blazing 15:35 to defeat Bryce Descavish of Central Cambria by 27 seconds. Descavish's teammates had a good meet behind him, placing five in the top 20 to score 51 points and win the team title by 26 over Bedford.


Class A

Sam Cunkelman of Homer Center ran 16:37 to become district champion by 22 seconds over Chris Colwell of Penns Valley. Colwell's performance inspired his team to a 56 second spread and a score of 65 points to win the team title by 25 points over St Joseph's Catholic Academy.

District 10

Girls

Class AAA

DuBois Area took six of the top seven places, led by district champion Payton McAninch (20:10) to score 18 points and defeat McDowell by 24.

Class AA

State champions Villa Maria Academy took seven of the top ten places to retain their district title and rebound from last week's Tri State Champs defeat. Villa Maria scored 20 points to defeat Grove City by 84 with a 55 second spread. Claire Brown led the way with a gold medal winning performance of 19:04.


Class A

Taylor Van Tassel of North East won her first district title, running 19:35 to win by 28 seconds over Brooklyn Messinger of Youngsville. Van Tassel's team survived a close 97-111 score line over Union City Area to win the district title.

Boys

Class AAA

Ryan Zimmerman of McDowell fought off the chasing duo of Peter Foradora of DuBois and Evan Fritzke of Cathedral Prep by a slim 3 seconds to win the district title with a time of 16:59. Cathedral Prep used a 54 second spread and five top ten finishers to score 31 points and defeat McDowell by 17.

Class AA

Two freshmen went toe to toe for the district title at the first time of asking. In the end, Ryan Starvaggi of Harbor Creek edged out a one second win over Jonah Powell of Grove City 16:41 to 16:42 to be crowned district champion. Grove City retained their district title with a 52 second spread and five top ten finishers to score 29 points and beat Harbor Creek by 44.

Class A

Connor Walsh of Cambridge Springs ran 16:28 to defeat Noah Curtin of Mercyhurst Prep by 18 seconds. Seneca will return to the state meet after scoring 86 points with a 75 second spread to defeat Mercyhurst Prep by 26. Saegertown was 3rd with 143 points.

District 9

Girls

Class AA

St Mary's took the top two individual places led by district champion Michelle Bauer (19:25) and Amanda Foster (20:05). Behind that duo, Bradford placed five of the next seven places to score 32 points to defeat Clearfield Area by 33.

Class A

Freshman Samantha Woolcock of Cranberry handled the pressure of a district meet by defeating Emma Ford of Northern Potter by a slim 4 second margin with a time of 20:54 to become district champion. Her tough performance helped motivate her team to a big victory, scoring 37 points to win by 72 over Clarion Limestone.

Boys

Class AA

Logan Caruso of Bradford Area dominated the field to become district champion, running 17:16 to win by 39 seconds. His team ran tough behind him to survive the challenge of Clearfield Area 44-48 to become district champs.

Class A

Isaac Wilson of North Clarion became the district champion with a time of 16:58 to win by 14 seconds over Harrison Keenan of Cranberry. Elk County Catholic won a tight team title race over Cranberry 52-56 thanks to their top three finishing in the top 7 overall.
