Briarwood Running Camp Holiday Invitational (Haverford College - Lutnick Center, Haverford, Pa.)
For the second straight night Haverford's Lutnick Center hosted a weeknight meet. It was boys-only Briarwood Running Camp Holiday Invitational meet and a handful of athletes put down good performances.
In the sprints, LaSalle's Charles Headen started off his indoor season on the right foot, winning the 55 meters (6.68) and 200 meters (23.46), winning both fairly handily. St. Joe's Prep's Miles Green also had a good night, finishing second to Headen in the 200m and winning the 400m in 51.45. Green topped off a busy night with a win in the 55 meter hurdles, winning in 8.01, PA#3.
The mile saw eight guys dip under 4:40 in a competitive field. Patrick Grant of LaSalle came away with the win in 4:26.93, a nice indoor PR.
Caleb Appiah-Owusu of Bensalem was another double winner, taking gold in both the triple jump (42-04.5) and long jump (20-01), both solid performances, considering a short runway and Appiah-Owusu also ran the 55m hurdles and the 200m.
Hempfield SP/PV/HJ/WT Competition (Hempfield [7] Area High School, Greensburg, Pa.)
Hempfield's second meet brought together some of the west's top throwers and vertical jumpers, including the Jordan Geist, looking to improve on his state best in the shot and weight.
Geist, of Knoch, took the win in both events, but neither were PRs. Still, he put up some solid marks, winning with a 66-5 in the shot and 70-1.5 in the weight throw for sizable victories. Hempfield's Dom Marshall continued his solid indoor campaign finishing second in both throws events. His 54-9.5 wasn't far off his own PA#2 he set at the first Hempfield meet. Marshall then tossed 61-9 in the weight throw, a five foot improvement from the first meet, improving his PA#3 mark.
In the girls' shot, Samantha Orie of Hempfield Area took the win in a season best throw of 38-4, with teammate Rachel Hutchinson claiming second place with a throw of 35-5.5. Hutchinson then took the win in the weight throw over Orie, with a toss of 37-0.
Adam Gamber of Hempfield won the pole vault in a big way, with a PR and new PA#2. Gamber cleared 14-3.5 for the win. He's now improved well over a foot from outdoors last year.
Hempfield's Molly DeBone won the girls' pole vault, clearing 10-8. Greensburg Central Catholic's Michelle Karabin and Laurel Highlands' Cassandra Phelan also cleared 10-8 to take second and third, respectively. DeBone, who cleared 11-6 earlier in the season at Dickinson, sits currently at US#2 for sophomores.
Gina Cuneo of Hempfield won the girls' high jump with a clearance of 5-2, and Chad Livingston of Laurel Highlands won on the boys side with a 5-10.
