The top hurdler in the nation and brother of Pittsburgh Steelers' cornerback Artie Burns is coming to Pennsylvania, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Thomas Burns, formerly of Miami Northwestern High in Florida, is reportedly transferring to Pine-Richland High School in Gibsonia for his senior year of high school. The Post-Gazette's Mike White reports that Burns is moving in with his older brother into the school district's area.
Burns is ranked first in the nation in both the 300 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles. Burns ran 35.25 in the 300 hurdles at the Great Southwest Classic back in June (watch that race below). At the USATF Junior National Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Burns clocked a 50.12 in the 400 meter hurdles. He ran 50.63 in the event to take the win at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
Former Penn Wood standout and current American champion in the 400 meter hurdles, Eric Futch holds the Pennsylvania state records in both events, with high school bests of 36.43 in the 300 meter hurdles and 50.73 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Burns holds a best of 14.30 in the 110 meter hurdles from his freshman year of high school. He also has PRs of 21.56 in the 200 meters and 48.84 in the 400 meters.
His 35.25 is the second fastest of any high schooler all time and also a national junior class record. The all-time national record is 35.02, set in 2009 by Reggie Wyatt of California.
White also reports that Burns chose to attend Pine-Richland over Pittsburgh Central Catholic.
