Jonah Hoey rolled to the national lead in the mile in his indoor season debut over the weekend.
The high school senior, who is competing unattached this season after leaving Bishop Shanahan, opened up with a 4:13.63 for a full mile at the Boston University Mini-Meet #3. That time is an indoor PR and US No. 1 for Hoey.
It was a Hoey-filled section of the mile. Jonah's older brothers -- both professional runners with adidas -- took first and second in the first and fastest section of the event. Josh Hoey had one of his best races as a pro to date, winning in 4:00.57, just missing the 4-minute barrier. Jaxson Hoey was a strong second in 4:02.64.

Saturday's race marked the youngest Hoey's first race of the track season. He placed 37th at Foot Locker Northeast in his one and only XC race of the season, but the senior returned to the track for competition for the first time since the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in June.
4:13.63 is an indoor personal best for Hoey. He ran a best of 4:11.41 for 1,600 meters last spring and went 1:51.12 for 800 meters. Boston University was the same track where Josh Hoey broke the national record in the 800 in 2018.
Expect Hoey to compete alongside Josh and Jaxson this season as he chases more fast times without competing in a traditional high school schedule. Saturday in Boston was a great start.
