Individuals Breakdown

Expect a close battle for the top spot in District 2 Class AAA this season. A pair of former District 2 individual champions are among the favorites and it should be a good one. Scranton's Bella Noreika was second in the district last year, and Crestwood's Molly DeMarzo was third. At the state meet, DeMarzo flipped the script, taking 45th, while Noreika came across 56th.

DeMarzo won the D2-AA title in 2019 before moving to AAA before last season. Noreika won the D2-AAA in 2019, and was just behind the now-graduated Abby Marion of Abington Heights at the district meet this year. This year, Noreika and DeMarzo will battle it for the district title, and both have a shot to place inside the top 25 at the state meet.

There are a number of other contenders, though, with eight of the top ten from the district meet last year returning this year. Abington Heights went 4-5 at the district meet last year with Gianna Sabatini and Maia Arcangelo. Arcangelo ran a great race at the state meet to finish in 50th. Sabatini wasn't far behind in 63rd.

Delaware Valley's Margaret Holderith and Hazleton's Jillian Wolk are the other two returning individual state qualifiers. Both will be looking to punch a return trip to Hershey.

Team Preview

Abington Heights has won five straight District 2 Class AAA team titles, and this fall the team is in good position to pursue its sixth in a row. While Marion, the defending individual champion, has graduated, Abington Heights its next six runners. Sabatini and Arcangelo are a good 1-2 punch and the team has some good depth after that.

AH has proven it can develop its talent and this team is once again in the driver's seat to claim another district title and with it, the one and only state qualifying spot.

Scranton and Wallenpaupack will look to challenge. Each team has a solid group of returners that will look to move up in the field this season. Crestwood, second in the district, has a couple good returners and will look to add depth to contend for a high finish this season.
