Meet Preview: District 5 Championships

District 5 Class A Boys - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 1
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 5

Individuals To Watch: Calan Bollman (Chestnut Ridge); Joseph McKelvey (Windber); Kevin Myers (Chestnurt Ridge)

Contending Teams: Chestnut Ridge; Windber Area

The Skinny: It been another strong season for Bollman, who will be the overwhleming district favorite on Thursday before he chases a high finish -- and possibly even a state title in Class A -- next week. He went 16:16 to win the LHAC last week and looks to be in a great spot in the postseason. The team battle could be a close one between Chestnut Ridge and Windber with just one state spot on the line. Windber was seventh and Chestnut Ridge was 13th at the Altoona Mt. Lion Invite earlier this season, so they should have the upperhand entering the meet.

District 5 Class AA Boys - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 1
  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 5

Individuals To Watch: Chase Brenneman (Somerset); Joseph Pencil (Bedford); Sean Russell (Westinghouse); Nate Scritchfield (Bedford); Branson Walker (Somerset); Colton Walker (Somerset)

Contending Teams: Bedford; Somerset Area; Westinghouse

The Skinny: Expect a close battle for both the team and individual titles in D5-AA. In the team race, it looks like it'll be between Bedford and Somerset with Westinghouse looking to challenge. At the LHAC Championships, Bedford placed fourth, 17 points ahead of fifth place Somerset. Bedford was without Scritchfield. If Scritchfield returns, Bedford is a very good bet to get that top spot, but we can still look for a very close race for the one and only state qualifying spot.

Individually, it should be close between Colton and Branson Walker, Scritchfield, and Russell. Colton Walker was fifth at LHACs and comes in as the favorite, but Scritchfield will be a factor, and Russell went 17:48 to take fifth in the Pittsburgh City League, and he could be a factor, too.
