Boys 4x800m Relay Preview
State College Area leads the state entering the weekend. The Little Lions went 8:02.55 to take second at the Millrose Games a month ago, and have some terrific middle distance depth that will make them a threat for the top spot.
In 2020 just before the pandemic shut things down, State College ran to the indoor state title, the team's third state crown in seven years. This team always brings it's best to state meets in the 4x8, and this will be a tough squad to beat on Sunday morning in the day's first boys' event.
Episcopal Academy has been a consistent relay in the event, and may perhaps be the team with the best shot at challenging State College. Episcopal has run 8:09 and 8:08 in consecutive weeks, and could be in a good spot for a big time drop on the big stage this weekend. Butler dropped an impressive 8:03.21 at Kent State a few weeks ago, and could also be in a spot for a strong performance if the Golden Tornado decide to go all-in here.
LaSalle College and Central Bucks West are a pair of squads on the cusp of 8:10. LaSalle went PA#5 8:11.70 earlier this season and CB West went 8:13.40. These teams, too, have some solid 800m depth that will make them factors for a high finish in this field.
Altoona Area made a nice statement, going 8:16 at Youngstown State a few weeks back. This team has some good potential heading into the state meet. Methacton, Central Bucks East, Great Valley, Twin Valley, Council Rock South, and South Fayette are among the other teams to keep in eye on this field.
With a lot of question marks going into this race about which teams will run 'A' teams, it's a hard event to predict. Regardless the door is open for a number of teams to sneak into medal, or even top five territory with a big day.
