Boys Distance Medley Relay Preview
Butler made a big statement this past week, dropping the fastest DMR in the state by ten seconds. The Golden Tornado blasted a 10:19.37 to win the TSTCTA title, and put themselves in the driver's seat to chase a state title in the event. This is a team with an incredible amount of depth (you've read the other relay previews, right?), and looks to be the team to beat in this field with 4:13 miler CJ Singleton likely on the anchor leg.
LaSalle College is a team that will look to threaten Butler for the top spot. The Explorers went 10:29.74 at the VA Showcase all the way back in mid-January. A month and a half since that race, LaSalle could have a number of seconds to shave off to contend for the win. Downingtown East is worth keeping an eye on. D-East is going all-in for the DMR on Sunday, and that could pay off. They went 10:30 at the Varsity Classic a few weeks back and are in a good spot to chase a high finish, and make a play for the win as this is the team's first event of the day.
Then it gets crowded after those top three teams. The next five teams -- South Fayette, Central Bucks West, Owen J. Roberts, State College Area, and North Allegheny -- have all run 10:39 this season. Then the next two teams -- Hatboro Horsham and Lower Merion -- have run 10:40 this winter. Obviously very little separates these squads. The race for the medals is going to be a close one, especially when you throw in Episcopal Academy and Archbishop Wood (with 4:05 indoor miler Gary Martin on the anchor).
The DMR is frequently a story of who has the most left in their legs after a busy day of racing. The same holds true this year, and it should make for an exciting final distance event of the day in this single heat final.
