PIAA Releases Proposed State Meet Qualifiers For 2022 & 2023

The PIAA released its proposal for its qualifiers and brackets for the PIAA Championships in 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, which affects both cross country and outdoor track and field.

These proposals passed on a first reading basis, but will be given "subsequent readings" in March and May of 2022. Nothing is final yet. These proposals are in conjunction with the PIAA's latest classification realignment, which will go into effect in the fall of 2022.

Here is a link to the PIAA's 2020-2021 cross country qualifiers breakdown.

Check out the proposals for PIAA cross country and PIAA outdoor track and field below.

The proposed changes are most noticeable in cross country, where some districts/classifications get more qualifiers than the last cycle, and others get less. We broke down some of the proposed changes that stood out:

  • Girls Class A will get 1 more team qualifier and 5 more individual qualifiers (23 teams and 115 individuals total), with District 1 getting those extra spots.
  • Girls Class AA will get 1 less team qualifier and 5 fewer individual qualifiers (21 teams and 105 individuals total), with District 12 losing those spots.
  • Girls Class AAA will get 1 less team qualifier and 5 fewer individual qualifiers (19 teams and 95 individuals total), with District 3 losing 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers, while District 12 gains 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers. The PIAA's graphic appears to not factor in the District 8/9/10 Sub-regional, which would be an additional 1 team and 5 individual qualifiers, bringing to total to 20 teams and 100 individuals total, matching its previous amount.
  • Boys Class A will get 1 more team qualifier and 5 more individual qualifiers (23 teams and 115 individuals total). District 5/District 8 (combined district meet) gains 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers. District 1 also gains 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers. District 2 loses 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers.
  • Boys Class AA will get 1 more team qualifier and 5 more individual qualifiers (21 teams and 105 individuals), with District 7 (WPIAL) getting those extra spots.
  • Boys Class AAA remains the same with 20 team qualifiers and 100 individual qualifiers, but District 3 gains 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers (now at 5 team qualifiers and 15 individual qualifiers total), and District 7 (WPIAL) loses 1 team qualifier and 5 individual qualifiers (now at 2 team qualifiers and 10 individual qualifiers total).
