Upset Alert! Ade Lloyd Takes Down Jayden Horton-Mims

State championships are all about the unexpected.

Few, however, could have predicted the madness that went down in the boys 400m final on Sunday at the PTFCA Indoor State Championships.

In the end, it was Bryn Mawr Harriton junior Ade Lloyd, fighting back from a significant deficit at 200 meters, who pulled a little magic out of his hat to grab the win in the final meters, clocking a finishing time of 47.41. The time was his first sub-48 performance, besting his time of 48.34 from Feb. 16.

The finish was almost unbelievable.

Jayden Horton-Mims, the high school junior who was the favorite entering the race, fought off a shocking challenge in the first lap by Abington's Luke Coleman and took control with less than 100 meters to go.

But that energy depletion may have been the difference, as Lloyd rallied when the race seemed over and took the win.

Coleman, who held the rail after 200 meters before fading shortly after, finished fourth in 48.85.
