61st Annual West Central Coaches Large School (AAA) Invitational
Altoona Area
Chris Carper went US#4 in the jav with a 216-9. His series was 211, 214-5, pass, 203-5, 214-4, 216-9.
AAA Girls
She's a junior, and a pretty good basketball player. But when the weather starts turing warmer (and in Altoona that can vary by a lot), Altoona junior Lysa Mealing turns her attention to the school's track team... and she's pretty good there, as well.
She started her night by winning the triple jump with a leap of 37-09.50; followed it up with a 5-3 in the high jump; and then long-jumped 16-9, before closing out her day by running the 3rd leg of the winning 4x100, which went a meet record 49.64. Teammate Kelly Davis, also a junior, was on the 4x100, and had her own meet record, going 12.36 to take the 100. She also won the 200, going 25.70.
State College senior Chloe Schmidt ran some pretty good times in the 1600 and 800 - both solo from the gun. She cruised to a 5:04.99 to start her night, and then capped it individually with a meet record and PA#2 2:12.53 in the 800.
Indian Valley senior Laura Loht threw her jav into the shadows, as the event was contested well after dark. She did manage a meet record of 146-05.
AAA Boys
Altoona senior Chris Carper isn't the loudest guy on the team. And he certainly isn't the most demonstrative in his celebrations of personal success. So when he literally tore up his own personal record book in the javelin with a series all beyond the magic 200' mark, throws coach and 1996 Altoona alum Rob Veloz was just happy to see a smile cross his star's face.
"He's intensely competitive," says Veloz. But, he says, Carper shows it in competition.
Coming off a sixth place at the Penn Relays in his first big meet where he was among the favorites to take the win, his coach says Carper just pressed a little too much.
At home a week later, and throwing on his familiar turf, Carper PRed by 13 feet and took it out over 200 for the first time - to 211, to be precise.
As Velox relates it, junior Kyle Hefkin of visiting State College had just thrown 191 in the last toss of the meet. Carper steps up to finish the competition, and lets his 211 fly.
"He wasn't even going to throw that day. But with his strength and speed, plus the technique coming around now, 200's should be easy for him."
And that's exactly what happened at his last West Central Coaches meet.
Hitting a 211 and 214-5 on this first two throws of the competition, he had to pass on his final throw to run the trials of the 110 hurdles. He would return for the finals, but only after all the other competitors had finished. So he was alone with his thoughts, and a crowd who wanted to see what he had left.
He had plenty... beginning with a 203-5, and finishing with a 214-4 and his final toss of 216-9, placing him at #4 in the country. As for Hefkin, he would finish second, also with a PR, and the #6 ranking on the MileSplit.us national list.
"I was disappointed when I threw that last one," he related. "I didn't do everything right."
But when the mark was announced, he did let out a bit of a smile.
Veloz says that they pulled Carper into the javelin because they knew he had a good arm a very talented outfielder and sometimes pitcher. And 150's his sophomore year got Veloz thinking that 200 might be a reasonable goal by the end of his senior year. "With the way he was throwing at the end of last year, I personally started thinking that 220-230 might be a better goal," the coach says.
Now, with a 216-9 on his resume; on an imperfect throw; the college calls should only increase.
He's being recruited not just for the jav, but as a possible decathlete.
He does the long and triple jumps. He has run on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. On Friday, he finished 2nd in the 110 hurdles in 15.46. And in what Veloz considers Carper's best track event (so far), he won in a PR of 39.05 for the 300 hurdles.
Carper even trained a bit this past summer in the pole vault.
"He's one of the best athletes this school has ever had," says his coach.
And that is saying something.
It's a thought that may even get Carper to crack a smile. But then it would be back to business. And more PRs and wins to come.
In other AAA boys' action...
State College senior Alex Kenney had a part in three meet records, anchoring the 4x100 to victory in 43.48, and taking over the number one spot in PA in the 200, going 21.42, after moving up to PA#2 in the 100 with his 10.68.
Indian Valley senior Michael Brode is apparently out for the season in the javelin with an injury. But that won't stop him from competing in those non-throwing events. He won the long jump with a leap of 20-09.50, and took second behind Kenny's two meet record performances in the 100 and 200, going 11.11 and 22.18, respectively.
Teammate Alex Monroe posted a strong distance double, first winning the 1600 in 4:19.82, and following that up with a meet record of 9:27.70 in the 3200.
The State College girls won the team title by 11.50 points over Altoona, tallying 146; while the reverse was fact for the boys, with Altoona getting 151 points, to top State College by 13.

61st Annual West Central Coaches Small School (AA) Invitational
Altoona Area
AA GIRLS
It's one of those meets where the AA schools get to show their stuff – not head-to-head vs the AAA schools, but on the same day, and under the same conditions.
Emerging star Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center – who had introduced herself to the larger track community by winning the invitational mile at the Penn Relays – put own a show of her own.
There was a method to the three-race strategy - and that is to see what she can handle in a state meet. The past two weeks at her county and conference meets, she has done the 1600, 400, 800 and 4x800. Traveling to this meet solo, it was her first opportunity to run a good mile time, and then to see what she could do in the 400 and 800.
What she did after her near PR 4:53.11, was come back with a PR 58.23 in the one-lapper, and a PR and PA#1 2:11.19 in the 800.
Piccirillo credits the competition – "(Kelsey) Seymour was right there in the 16 and 800, and I hate to lose, so the competition really helped tonight."
Oh, and all three marks were meet records. Both the 1600 and 800 records had been held by Seymours. 2008 grad Carly Seymour 4:58.13 was also broken by younger sister Kelsey.
But Kelsey's 2:14.55 from 2008 had been the mark to beat in that event. She went 2:16.00 behind Piccirillo on this night.
"Doing a good mile and then coming back like that in the other two really gives me confidence for states. It shows what I can do," Piccirillo says. Depending upon her team's 4x800 health by then (they have run 9:47), she'll probably limit herself to the 1600-800 double.
There was a four-event winner from Northern Cambria senior Janae Dunchack. She high jumped 5-4, long-jumped 16-9, and went 12.69 in the 100 and 25.94 for the half lap.
Elk County Catholic junior Megan Dornish captured shot and improved her PA#1 with a put of 44-0.25, and the discus with a PA#6 throw of 130-06. Kane senior Ashley Rolick took 2nd in the shot at 41-02.50.
AA Boys
Coach Ted Miller has retired once, and then come back to bring the North East program back to AA prominance. This season, he has a lot of talent, but some real talent at the high school bookends of the boys distance program. Senior Alex Beardsley - who is headed to Edinboro - has been at the front of every race since XC.
Beardsley started his night in Altoona by anchoring the team to a meet record of 8:02.50 in the 4x800, before coming back in the 3200 with a 9:26.23.
But when graduation claims the senior class, Miller has three more years of distance fun with Ryan Smathers. The freshman won the 1600 in a PR of 4:23.17.
Tyrone sophomore Nicholas Patton set a meet record of 48.55 in the 400, by holding off the 48.96 by Somerset senior Kyle Younkin - which was also under the old meet record.
And Tyrone Sharard Hankerson set a meet record of 55-04.75 in the shot put.
