Day 2 Summary:

 

3200 meter run:  Emily Giannotti, Coudersport, made her final push with 800 to go in the Class AA girls' field, securing first place with a 10:43.87. In the Class AAA race, Pennsbury freshman Sara Sargent made up a 30-meter deficit on Central Bucks East's Katie Kinkead in the last lap, running an official 67.4-second split to claim the outdoor title in 10:21.06, which is a new PIAA record.  Kinkead and Sargent collided in the final stretches, with Kinkead going down with only a few meters to go. She finished in second at 10:24.72. In the boys' Class AA group, Alex Beardsley of North East finished three seconds ahead of Milton Hershey's Brett Kubiak, grabbing the title in 9:25.34. And in Class AAA, Unionville's Matthew Fischer fought off a final push from North Allegheny's Ryan Gil (9:03.87), winning the large school boys' race in 9:03.01.  Gil split 61.3 and Fischer was 61.6.

 

100/110H Semifinals: Tabitha Bemis, Quaker Valley, enters the girls' Class AA final as the top seed with a 15.12. In the Class AAA group, Shelley Black heads into the finals as the quickest hurdler in 14.18. Five others recorded times in the 16s. Josh McFrazier, New Brighton, was the top boys' time in Class AA with a 14.46 and Don Pollitt, Hazleton Area, finished in 14.28 in Class AAA. His time was one hundredths of a second faster than Kuwan Scott of Wilson Area (14.29). 

 

100 Dash Semifinals: Cierra White, Carver Engineering & Sciences, enters into the Class AA finals as the No. 1 seed with her 12.09. In the girls' Class AAA field, Lydia Ali, Radnor, registered a 12.03. Thomas Walker secured the best boys' Class AA time in 11.02 while three sprinters registered times in the 10.9 range in Class AAA. Alex Kenney, State College, is the fastest with his 10.93. 

 

4x800 Relay:  AAA girls - Conestoga won with a time of of 9:08.58 in a close finish with West Chester Henderson, 9:08.93.  Downingtown East was 3rd in 9:09.83.  AAA boys - Cedar Crest's anchor brought it home with a gutsy last lap to win in 7:43.64.  Central Bucks West pushed it in for a strong finish with a 7:44.13.  Abington was 3rd in 7:44.65.  8 teams were under 7:50, 2 more under 7:52.  AA girls - Lewisburg won over Central Cambria 9:19.47 to 9:24.92.  AA boys - Quaker Valley won with an impressive 7:46.46 fueled by Omar Hyjek's 1:52.8 split.  Trinity was 2nd in 7:51.16.

 

100/110H Finals: Tabitha Bemis, Quaker Valley, became the 11th straight athlete from the program to medal consecutively at the state event. Her 14.74 first-place effort in the Class AA field gave her gold. And with another gold already registered in the high jump on Friday, the senior captured a double over the weekend. Shelley Black, Coughlin, recorded a 13.9 in the Class AAA field. In the boys' Class AA group, Josh McFrazier of New Brighton unleashed a 14.31. Over in Class AAA, Hazleton's Don Pollitt uncorked a near flawless race to capture gold in 13.83. It was his second straight title. 

 

100 Dash Finals: Cierra White, Carver Engineering & Sciences, produced her first gold of the day with a time of 11.95, which was the only performance out of the entire Class AA field to break the 12-second barrier. Lydia Ali, Radnor, finished first in Class AAA with a 11.83, which was the best girls' time overall. In the boys' Class AA field, Milton Hershey's Thomas Walker fought off a crowded final that included two others in the 10.9 range, to record a 10.78 first place. Rounding out the event was the Class AAA boys', who were led by Norristown's Tyler Smith, who sported a 10.65 final time. 

 

1,600 Run: Angel Piccirillo, Homer Center, secured the girls' Class AA title with a gritty 5:02.86, fending off Central Cambria's Kelsey Seymour (5:04.35)  in the final meters. In Class AAA, Amber Valimont, Hempfield Area, crafted a special race by improving four seconds off her PR en route to a 4:54.02. Over in the boys' Class AA field, Omar Hyjek, Quaker Valley, took control early and registered a 4:15.98 win. In Class AAA, Will Kellar, West Chester Henderson, put forth an exhaustive effort to finish first in 4:12.00, only two hundredths of a second faster than Father Judge's Tom Kehl

 

400 Dash: Alyssa Lombardo, Saucon Valley, narrowly edged West Philadelphia Catholic's Michelle Davis (54.87), recording a 54.65 win. In Class AAA, Quakertown's Alicia Evans was among three others that finished in 55 seconds, but her 55.15 was the fastest. In the boys' AA field, Kyle Younkin, Somerset, secured a win with a time of 48.03, beating three others who captured 48 second times. And in the Class AAA group, Brady Gehret hit another gear in the final 200 to produce a 46.46, only tenths off the PIAA record. 

 

400 Relay: West Philadelphia Catholic captured the girls' Class AA crown with a running of 48.40. In Class AAA, Penn Hills secured their title with a 47.37. Over in the boys' Class AA field, Trinity popped off a 42.84, good for first, and in Class AAA, Central Bucks South (42.30) showed their defining salvo in defeating Northeast (42.36) by six hundredths of a second.

 

300 Hurdles: Mariame Conde, Swenson Arts & Technology, secured a win in the girls' Class AA field with a 44.67. In Class AAA, Shelley Black, Coughlin, doubled her medal count with an electric 43.23, defeating defending champion Leah Nugent of Abington (43.28) in a tense race. In the boys' AA group, Sean Deschamps, McGuffy, was first in 39.01 while in Class AAA, Kuwan Scott of Wilson Area gathered his first gold with a 37.79. He beat Dakota Grace, Chambersburg, by 11 tenths of a second. 

 

800 Run: Two-time state champion Kalyn Fisher of Lewisburg proved she hadn't lost a step, winning the Class AA field in a PA#1 time of 2:10.62, which gave her a third straight title. In Class AAA, State College's Chloe Schmidt recorded a 2:09.98. In the boys' Class AA race, Evan Miller of Laurel won in 1:55.18. And in the Class AAA field, Central Bucks South's Tom Mallon didn't register the all-time state record of 1:48.8, but he did set a new PIAA record, first broken in 1984, with a time of 1:49.31. He became a three-time state champion in the event. 

 

200 Dash: Carver Engineering & Science's Cierra White captured her second gold of the day, securing a time of 24.70, which was the only time out of Class AA to break 25 seconds. In the Class AAA field, Abington Height's Jordan Hoyt recorded a 24.64. Over in the boys' Class AA field, Nicholas Patton, Tyrone Area, was among seven runners that crossed the finish in 22 seconds. Fortunately, his 22.31 captured first place. In Class AAA, Altoona's Brady Gehret doubled his medal count with a stellar race and time of 21.23. Three others finished in the 21-second range. 

 

4 x 400 Relay: In the girls' Class AA field, West Philadelphia Catholic's 3:51.76 was two seconds better than the next best team, Swenson Arts & Technology, and was a new PIAA record. Directly following in Class AAA was Penn Hill's 3:46.31, which was also a new PIAA record. In the Class AA boys' field, West Philadelphia Catholic recorded a winning time of 3:21.64 and in Class AAA, Cardinal O'Hara won the large school boys' heat in 3:16.94. Abington's 3:16.99 was in the hunt. 

 

Saturday AM Field: Julia Koloski, Montrose, captured the girls' Class AA triple jump with a leap of 39-0. In the girls' Class AA javelin, Tamaqua's Allison Updike flung a 161-02, which is the PA All-Time #5 and the state meet's all-time #2 throw. In the girls' Class AAA pole vault, Lauren Terstappen, Phoenixville, secured a 12-0 liftoff. Over in the boys' Class AA long jump, Derek Goul of Schuylkill Valley recorded a leap of 22-4.75. In the boys' Class AA discus, Jake Brenza, Trinity, produced a throw of 164-9 and in the boys' Class AAA high jump, Marcus Blakely of Coatesville pumped over the bar at 6-8, beating Ryan Brumfield of Owens J Roberts, who also jumped the same height. Finishing out the AM field, Class AA boys' shot putter Blake Davenport, Kennett, recorded a 55-7.5. 

 

Saturday PM Field: In the girls' Class AA shot put, Elk County Catholic's Megan Dornish ripped off a throw of 45-8.25, giving her gold. In the Class AAA triple jump,  Carlisle's Ashley Corum became a three-time state champ with a leap of 40-11.75. In the girls' Class AA discus, Hempfield Area's Rachel Serafin, a gold medalist in the shot put on Friday, doubled her medal count with a 144-00 heave. It was her second straight outdoor title. Over in the Class AA boys' high jump, Luke Gallaher of Forest Hills captured gold with a jump of 6-6. Two others recorded the same height. Adam Phillippi, Saucon Valley, registered a win in the boys' Class AAA pole vault, recording a 15-0 effort. Over at the Class AAA long jump, Methacton's Carlton LaVong, who wore a shirt that read "Google Me" and was consistently energizing the crowd, drew a heavy response when he jumped a PIAA record of 24-8.5. Finally in the boys' Class AA javelin, Ben Koyack, Oil City, was a surprise when he captured gold with a throw of 192-11. Altoona's Chris Carper, PA#1 entering the meet, finished in 11th with a throw of 174-04.

Day 1 Summary:

Friday 4 x 800 Trials: AAA boys: Baldwin was the fastest qualifier out of the 4x8's with a time of 7:50.03.  Arkangelo James powered home a 1:53.7 3rd leg for Baldwin.  Five other teams at 7:50.  AAA girls: West Chester Henderson was the fastest qualifier with a time of 9:18.47.  AA boys: Milton Hershey was the fastest with a 8:00.73.  

 

100 Dash: Cierra White, Carver Engineering & Sciences, recorded the best time in the girls' AA race with a 12.23. Lydia Ali, Radnor, followed with the best in AAA with a 12.13. In the boys' AA, Marquis White of Constitution held up his No. 1 seed with a 10.92. Tyler Smith, Norristown, secured a 10.9 in AAA, which was the overall fastest time on the boys' side. 

 

100/110H: Tabitha Bemis, Quaker Valley, was the fastest qualifier in AA with a 15.14 and Leah Nugent, Abington, was the quickest in AAA with a 14.24. She was also the fastest on the day in the girls' races. Shelley Black, Coughlin, was right behind with a 14.25. Josh McFrazier, New Brighton, was the fasted in AA boys' with a 14.31. In Class AAA, Dan Pollit, Hazleton, secured a 14.03, quickest overall on the day. 

 

1,600 Run: South Park's Haley Pisarcik registered a 5:03.29 in Heat 1, tops in the Class AA girls' race. It was better than No. 1 seed Kendall Seymour, Central Cambria, who qualified for the finals with a 5:03.84. Homer Center's Angel Piccirrillo went 5:06.24. In the Class AAA girls', Pennsbury's Sara Sargent led the field with a 4:57.45. Homar Hyjek, Quaker Valley, had the fastest time in the boys' Class AA race with a 4:21.00 and Tom Kehl, Father Judge, led the Class AAA boys' event with a 4:14.48.

 

400 Dash: Chante Moore, West Philadelphia Catholic, was the only Class AA girl runner to break 57 with her 56.87. Two others, Alexa Sarsfield of Springdale (57.8)and  Lackawanna Trail's Lauren Ellsworth (57.77), broke 58 seconds. Lydia Ali, Radnor, let Heat 1 with a 56.71, which was the fastest in the Class AAA field. In Class AA boys', Trenton Coles, Clairton, secured the best finish with a 48.23 and Matt Gilmore, Cheltenham, was best in Class AAA with a 48.39.

 

4 x 100 Relay: Eight teams broke the 50 second barrier in the Class AA girls' field, including the No. 1 seed, West Philadelphia Catholic, who ran a 48.06. In the Class AAA girls' race, seven teams broke the 49 second wall, with Cheltenham securing the best finish with its 47.98. On the boys' side, Class AA side Trinity was one of 11 teams to break 44 seconds, as its 43.42 led the field. Finally, in the Class AAA boy's field, Central Bucks South was only .8 tenths of a second away from a PIAA state record of 41.14, as its 41.98 led the group. 

 

300 Hurdles: Rachel Haupt, Montoursville, led the Class AA girls' crop with a 45.20, the fastest of five who broke 46 seconds in the race. Over in Class AAA, Abington's stud, Leah Nugent, recorded the fastest girls time of the day at 43.18. Sean Deschamps of McGuffy led the Class AA boys' with a recording of 39.27 and Kuwan Smith, Wilson Area, finishing in 37.90 in the Class AAA group, leading the boys' field. 

 

800 Meter: A superb finale is set for tomorrow in Class AA, as two-time defending state champ Kayln Fisher of Lewisbrug will try to connect for a three-peat. Her 2:18.52 heads a group that includes Homer Center's Angel Piccirillo, who is right on Fisher's heels with a 2:18.97. In Class AAA, Emma Keenan, Gwynedd Mercy, heads the field with her 2:14.11. Evan Miller of Laurel is the frontman in the Class AA boy's crop, leading with a 1:57.53 while six runners secured times at 1:55 in Class AAA, including Central Buck South's Tom Mallon, who is sure to put on a show on Saturday. A hair behind Mallon is Hershey's Mato Bekelja with his 1:55.63.

 

200 Meter: Cierra White, of Carver Engineering & Sciences, heads Class AA with a 24.62 while Jordan Hoyt, Abington Heights, is tops in Class AAA with a 24.36. Trenton Coles, Clairton, grabbed the No. 1 seed in Class AA with his 22.09 while Alex Kenney of State College is among two others that captured times in the 21 second range. Kenney's 21.76 leads the field. 

 

Friday 4x400 Meter Relays Trials: Cheltenham opened the AAA Boys heat with a statement of 3:16.02 to lead all qualifiers... but Altoona closed the heats with a statement of their own, complete with an exclamation point 45.7 anchor by Brady Gehret - to finish with the third fastest trials time of 3:16.92 (Cardinal O'Hara ran 3:16.05 chasing Cheltenham. In AA Girls, Swenson led five teams under four minutes with their 3:54.72. West Catholic ran 3:55.95. In the AAA Girls, nine teams dipped under four minutes behind Abington's 3:52.17, Penn Hills' 3:53.24, and Gwynedd-Mercy's 3:53.30. And in AA Boys, 3:24 was the time of the day, with no fewer than six teams in the vicinity. The fastest on the day was by Boiling Springs in 3:24.08.

 

Friday AM Field: Two PIAA state records were broken, but none was more exciting than the girls' Class AA pole vault, where Wilson Area's Allison Vanek elicited the biggest oohs and aahs from the crowd with her 12-7 vault. The jump broke the 11 year old record of 12-3, first broken in 2000 by Fairview's Kim Stuyvesant. In the boys' Class AA javelin, Thomas Long of Saint Pius X flung a 213-10 on his very first attempt, beating the six-year old record of 207-10 held by Central Columbia's Osayi Osunde in 2005. Tabitha Bemis, Quaker Valley, claimed the long jump at 18-3.50. In the girls' Class AA high jump, Pennridge junior Annie Holland captured the title with a 5-8 leap. And in the girls' Class AAA shot put, Hempfield Area's Rachel Serafin reached 44-3.25 for the crown. In the boys' Class AA triple jump, Jarred Gambrell of Athen's Area took his second straight state title with a leap of 48-11.25. Eric Masington, Bensalem, recorded a 177-9 in the Class AAA boy's discus, capturing his own title. 

 

Friday PM Field: Carlton Lavong of Methacton broke the boys' Class AAA triple jump PIAA record of 50-03.50, held by Chris Aikens of Muhlenberg in 1993, with a 50-5 mark. In the girls' Class AA high jump, Janae Dunchack, Northern Cambria, became a four-time champion with her leap of 5-6. Emily Woods of Hickory earned the girls' Class AA discus title with a personal record of 148-10. Jordan Matthews, Abington, claimed the girls' Class AAA long jump title with a mark of 18-4.50. Over in the girls' Class AAA javelin, Indian Valley's Laura Loht recorded a heave of 145-9. Lanny Buck, Palmerton, won the boys' Class AA pole vault in 14-06. And in the boys' Class AA shot put, Wilmington's Brad Zaboroski secured a title with a throw of 57-3.50.
