6/23-Whiting wins US Junior Shot Put title, Leach advances, Backel in contention on Day 1 @ JR Champ

Using a heavier Shot, Ryan Whiting erased the only 2nd place of his senior season at the USATF Junior T&F Championships in California, with a throw of 64-09.25. He actually won on his first throw of the finals, and improved on the next-to-last and last throws. He now joins the USA Pan-Am team that will compete in Canada in late July.

\"I thought I did pretty good. Everything ran smoothly, except for having the wait in the staging area. I was just trying to get one good throw so I didn\'t have to worry about the other throwers. And after my sixth throw, only two guys were left. I wasn\'t too worried. It\'ll be fun to see what other countries have to offer.\"

Nicole Leach left nothing to chance, winning her heat of the 400 Hurdles in 58.13.

After four events, Amy Backel, the Northern grad, took 14th place in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 16.57 -2.2 for 646 points, tied for 7th in the High Jump, clearing 5-01.75, won the Shot Put with a throw of 40-06.75, and finished 14th in the 200, going 27.88.
