Welcome to May! The month of April ended with a bang as many teams gathered in West Philadelphia at Franklin Field and represented the state well at the Penn Relays. The boys were fortunate to not have to confront the rain that delayed the girls on Thursday and the boys took full advantage.
 

The 4x800 did not disappoint as both Abington and Central Bucks West earned top three finishes in the Championship of America. At the end of the weekend, Abington began the weekend at PA#1 and finished at PA#1 and US#2 with a time of 7:37.79. CB West moved to PA#2 and US#3 at 7:38.97. Lasalle (7:49.21 US#9) and Wissahickon (7:49.50) also qualified for the COA final and moved to PA#3 and PA#4 respectively. As of right now there are ten teams under 8 minutes this season. Going into the weekend, there were only three.
 

The 4x100 meter relay at Penn also produced the top four times in the state this year. Strath Haven improved their time in the top spot with a time of 42.24. Father Judge kept pace with a new PA#2 time of 42.53. Central Bucks West showed their relay depth with a PA#3 performance of 42.60. Cheltenham ran 42.65 for PA#4 and to round out the top five is Susquehanna Township, who ran 42.67 closer to home at the Carlisle Stan Morgan Invitational.
 

The 4x400 meter relay did not have as much change at the top compared to past years. Most of the teams in the top 8 had got off on a strong foot to start the spring. Penn Wood emerged from the weekend as the new state leaders with their win in the Philadelphia Area 4x400 with a time of 3:18.31. Cheltenham is starting to find themselves with Matt Gilmore getting healthy, running a PA#3 time of 3:19.84. Right now there are five teams under 3:20 and twelve under 3:23.
 

Even though it was Penn Relays weekend, there were many invitationals and plenty of open event action around the state. With most sprinters running relays, the open sprints were quiet this week. The 100 meter dash added two more sub 11 second performers, as Joe Williams of Emmaus (10.94h) and Kalil Slaughter of Sheffield (10.97) joined the list. The top eight is now at 11 seconds flat and under! There is now a tie for the top spot in the 200 with Trenton Coles of Clarion joining Matt Gilmore in the 21.84 club, only his was a converted hand time. In the 400, Jonathan Muszik of Sharon joined the top five with a PA#4 performance of 49.45 to win the event at the Hermitage Invitational.
 

The distance events continue to look deeper and deeper, especially the 800 meter run. Andy Flynn of Cumberland Valley (1:55.90 PA#5) and Ryun Holder of Chambersburg (1:56.26 PA#6) duked it out at the Millersville Invitational on Friday, with Flynn holding on to win. Andrew Bridgeforth of Nazareth Area ran 1:56.1 in Allentown at the School District's invitational for PA#7. Two more 4:20 1600 meter performances from Glen Burkhardt of Unionville (4:20.28, PA#5) and Matt Kacyon of Whitehall (4:20.9, PA#8) make sub 4:21 to mark to break to crack the top 8. Meanwhile the 3200 added five new performances, including a North Hills state #1 and #2 from Joe Kush (9:26.96) and Zach Hebda (9:26.97). Sub 9:35 is the cut off for the top 8.
 

In the hurdles, Christian Lupica of Holy Ghost Prep (PA#5 14.59) and Matt Deysher of Cedar Crest (14.64h PA#6) earned their way to the list with victories at their respective invitationals. Deysher also added himself to the 300 meter hurdles list (PA#5 39.34h) and 110 meter hurdles leader Kuwan Scott of Wilson (11) moved to PA#2 in the 300 meter hurdles with a 38.84h at the ASD Invitational.
 

The field events were great this week with some performing at Penn and others trying their luck around the rest of the state. The long jump added two to the top five, as Jean-Luc Twyman of Coatesville jumped a PA#3 23-1 and Austin Rizzo of Williamsport won for the 2nd straight week at Lock Haven with a PA#4 mark of 22-10.50. In the triple jump, Jarred Gambrell continues to show that he may be the class of the event with his 2nd place finish in the Penn Relays triple jump with a US#5 mark of 50-0.75 to finish behind the indoor national champion. Imani Brown won the event at Carlisle with a PA#2 mark of 48-7. The triple jump had the most improvement this week, as seven of the top eight are brand spanking new jumps from this past weekend. In the high jump, two more 6-7 jumpers were added and two more 6-6 jumpers were added to make the 6-6 and above club increase to 12. Luke Gallagher of Forest Hills moved to PA#2 with a mark of 6-7.75 at Penn Relays. In the pole vault, three new top five performances were added including a 15-5 from current state leader Patrick Anderson of Kane Area. Brandon Teribery of Bradford Area (14-6.50 PA#4) and Shawn Meyer of Palmyra (14-6.25 PA#5) were the two other top five performers.
 

In the throws, five of the top eight performances in the shot put were from this past weekend, including the top two. State leader Luke Monta of Greensburg Salem won the Westmoreland County Championships with a throw of 57-8 while PA#2 Matt Bell won the Hermitage Invitational with a mark of 56-3.50. That's a 14.5 inch difference between 1st and 2nd in PA. In the discus, we have a new top three, with Kyle Long of Hempfield (3) improving his state leading mark (188-2 US#9) and Kyle Felpel of Cocalico (178-9) improving his season best while the two represented PA well at Penn. Tyler Kerstetter of Selinsgrove won the discus at Lock Haven with a PA#3 mark of 172-1. Finally in the javelin, the top two marks on the list were the top two marks at the Penn Relays! Stephen Feister of Hempfield (3) (211-5) and Billy Stanley of South Park (207-10) are also US#2 and US#3 this year!
