DELCO Championships
PA's top ranked Cardinal O'Hara out did their 2010 DELCO championship performance, placing 1-3-4-5-6 to score 19 points and repeat as county champions. The score was one point better than the 2010 team, and was the 14th title in the 47 year history of the event - more than any other school. Dan Savage led the way for O'Hara, winning the gold medal in a nail biting finish, holding off Jack Huemmler of Strath Haven in the final few meters to win the race.
For the girls, Hannah Grossman repeated as county champion, running a comfortable 18:28; joined under 19 minutes by only one other athlete, Sophia Meehan of Haverford Township. Grossman's team also had a big day as well. Strath Haven's 2-5 girls placed 18-19-20-22 to defeat defending champions Haverford Township by eleven points.

GIRLS TEAM PREVIEW
HAVERFORD appears to be the odds-on favorite to win its second DELCO team championship in a row(2010 was its first since 1982). HAVERFORD’s coach Kristi (Jamison-Haverford alum) Ritchie has planned this season to hopefully run its best by Districts, and DELCOS will be only their 3rd weekend invitational. HAVERFORD returns 5 of their top 6 from their 2010 Championship. HAVERFORD was undefeated in the competitive Central League this year and finished 1st at Abington Inv(scoring 69 points defeating Great Valley(2nd-90) and STRATH HAVEN(5th-130). At Paul Short they continued to run well, coming in 6th (behind PENNSBURY, WALT WHITMAN(MD), DOWNINGTOWN EAST, STATE COLLEGE, and CENTERVILLE(OH)). HAVERFORD scored 301 points defeating county teams-- NOTRE DAME(423), STRATH HAVEN(579) and OHARA(686).
As for the runner-up trophy, NOTRE DAME(2nd 2010 1st 2009) is the favorite with a strong Top 2, a solid 3-4, and a quickly improving #5. AGNES IRWIN(looking for their 1st ever DELCO trophy) has 4 seniors who have been developed beautifully by their veteran and always congenial coach. They came in 4th in the Paul Short “White” race, but would have been 3 points ahead of STRATH HAVEN if they had run “Brown”. STRATH HAVEN(4th 2010 2nd 2009 1st 2008) has a super #1 and about 13 other pretty good runners. For them to have a chance, at least one of that day’s varsity 6 must be in the TOP 20. OHARA(3rd 2010 3rd 2009) is improving and has closed the gap on the other Top teams!(Kelly OH 10) may give them the runner up front to lead their talented pack!?
INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW
A STRATH HAVEN runner has won the individual championship 3 of the last 4 years(Frick 2007--Rutkowski 2008--Grossman 2010). At this point of the season senior(defending champion) Hannah Grossman(SH) appears to be the slight favorite. Hannah finished 1st at Abington, 2nd at Briarwood “Large”, 4th at Bull Run(MD), and 5th at Paul Short(18:26). Grossman(SH) has not lost to a DELCO opponent this year, but she barely beat one of her toughest rivals, senior Maria Seykora(ND), at Paul Short by 4 seconds(Seykora(ND) did run much faster than Grossman(SH) in different races at Briarwood). Seykora(ND) also has performed really well in a # of tough meets(3rd PTXC3, 4th Briarwood “Championship”, and 2nd Carlisle “Puma Challenge”. The only other girls with a legitimate shot at becoming the DELCO CHAMPION are senior Sophia Meehan(HAV) and junior Tess Meehan(HAV). Sophia(HAV) was runner-up as a freshman and a junior and 6th as a soph. She is a strong 800M runner(as evidenced by her PIAA STATE medal last spring) and if she can hang on, she may be able to kick it in and kick down the door to her 1st DELCO Individual Championship. Sister Tess(HAV) is also coming on, and after her freshman year 10th place STATES finish, she has shown she is capable of a big race!! Good luck to Tess, but as coaches most of us love to see SENIORS getting the top prizes!! Three of the better runners in DELAWARE COUNTY history will graduate this year----and one of them will go off to college as the reigning DELAWARE COUNTY GIRLS XC CHAMPION!!!
There will be 20 plaque winners and the TOP 7 girls are likely to make 1st team ALL-DELCO. 4 of those spots will likely go to Grossman(SH 12), Seykora(ND 12), S.Meehan(HAV 12), and T.Meehan(HAV 11). The other 3 coveted spots will be a real battle?? Here are the possible 5th thru 7th finishers(in no order)----Chang(PC 11)(6th 2010 2nd 2009), Rudawsky(GARV 11)(7th 2010 27th 2009), Powers(ND 12)(9th 2010 22nd 2009 19th 2008), Wunisch(AI 12)(36th 2009 56th 2008), Galligan(SF 10), and Kelly(OH 10)(24th 2010).
BOYS TEAM PREVIEW
OHARA! OHARA! OHARA!---Last year’s team victory at DELCOS was unbelievable! Their Top 5 finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th and 4 of them are back!!! Historically, OHARA has dominated the DELCO XC CHAMPS. Coach Tom Kennedy’s harriers have been FIRST 8 of the last 13 years, SECOND 4 of those years and only out of the TOP 2 in 2008. This year OHARA is ranked #1 in PENNSYLVANIA claiming 3 impressive TEAM wins so far--Briarwood Championship, PIAA Foundation “Gold”, and Great American(North Carolina). No DELCO team is even close to them this year. OHARA will make more TEAM HISTORY this Saturday!
At least there may be a TEAM race for 2nd!? Central League foes, Haverford(3rd 2010), Strath Haven(4th 2010), and Penncrest(2nd 2010), will likely fight it out on Rose Tree’s hills. Haverford has a deep team and their 5th runner is very close to their first. It is possible they could have 5 runners in the TOP 20. As for Strath Haven, Their top 2 are really strong, but they need their 4th and 5th to move up. Penncrest always runs well at DELCOS, and 2011 will probably be the same.
INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW
Lets look at some more HISTORY. An OHARA runner has been the DELCO Champ 7 of the last 11 years(including 2010). Last year’s returnees are 3rd-Bilotta(OH 12),4th- Savage(OH 11), 5th-Pastore(OH 11), 7th-Ostroski(OH 12), 12th-M.Kazanjian(PC 10), 15th-A.Smart(GARV 11), 16th-Seelaus(SH 12), and 17th-N.Smart(GARV 10)(YES! The Smart’s are BO Smart’s kids). So far this year 3 of these runners appear to be the favorite at the 2011 DELCOS. Savage(OH 11)has been #1 for his team in all races this year. He is consistent and very tough! Seelaus(SH 12) won the Abington Invitational and BULLDOG and has greatly improved in 2011. Bilotta(OH 12) has been close to Savage(OH 11) all season and could be ready to break through. 4th through 7th(ALL DELCO) will be a battle among Pastore(OH 11), Ostrowski(OH 12), James(OH 9), Huemmler(SH 11), M.Kazanjian(PC 10), Kays(HAV 12), Bodine(HAV 11), and O’Donnell(GARV 12).

YAIAA Championships
By Cory Mull
EMIGSVILLE -- In her fourth and final attempt at the YAIAA Championships, New Oxford senior Kaylee Kubisiak finally came away with the grand prize.
The mercurial harrier, whose career has seen its fair share of highs and lows, won her county meet on Tuesday at John Rudy Park, scoring a time of 19 minutes, 4.38 seconds. The time was good for a place on the top 50 girls' 5,000-meter times in Pennsylvania.
It had been four years since New Oxford last fielded a champion -- Jordan Jenkins in 2008 -- even though it seemed as though Kubisiak was headed bigger things as early as a sophomore. Minor injuries had derailed her attempts in recent years.
She had taken two straight fourth place finishes in 2009 and 2010 before her breakthrough on Tuesday.
"I just believe (in going forward)," Kubisiak said of her win. "You need a positive attitude. Sometimes I feel like I've peaked for a race or two, but then I bounce back up."
Last year's champion, Central York's Kelsey Ibarra, was on the sidelines Tuesday. York Suburban's Lilly Corsaro, a runner-up in 2009 and 2010, capped off her senior campaign with her third straight second-place finish.
"I had a bad practice on Thursday and my coaches were aiming for districts," Corsaro said. "My legs were shot. She [Kubisiak] went and I couldn't keep up."
The race seemed destined for a tussle between the top two girls' runners in York County. As recent as Thursday, Corsaro and Kubisiak squared off against each other -- with Corsaro edging the diminutive Colonial in a dual-meet.
The runners ran side-by-side as late as the 4,000-meter mark before Kubisiak began to pull away.
Kubisiak ultimately had more left in the tank and used her superior stamina to outwit and outlast Corsaro. With 500 meters to go, she uncorked a final push.
"I got over there with 500 meters to go and I was like 'That's a stupid
idea,'" Kubisiak said. "I couldn't let myself think that. I had to be positive. I kind of imagined people in front of me and aimed for them. I went. The more space I put between us, the harder it was for her to catch back up."
Kubisiak had logged a top time of 18:57 at the Don Stoner Invitional earlier in the year. It was her first foray below the elusive 19-minute clip of her career. But she's been toying in the 19s since her sophomore campaign, when she first logged a 19:40. As a junior, she dipped to 19:23.
For whatever reason, however, it never came together at the YAIAA Championships. Until now. Jenkins, a two-time winner who currently plies her trade at North Carolina State, had been a key influence on Kubisiak in 2008.
Corsaro, meanwhile, had her sights on larger goals. The senior finished sixth at the District 3 meet a year ago.
"I know the big picture is districts and states," Corsaro said.
Corsaro's teammate, Samantha Gehly, finished third in 19:52, while Red Lion's Brooke Amandola was fourth in 20:00.18.
Littlestown senior Liz Reese scored a fifth place finish and a time of 20:08. She had finished 12th as a junior in 2010.
Rounding out the top 10 was Central York senior Megan Lundy (20:15), Red Lion freshman Julia Kendrick (20:17), Fairfield junior Kaitlyn Beckham (20:22.38), Kennard-Dale freshman Kayla White (20:28) and York Suburban sophomore Lauren Shrader (20:33).
York Suburban had sixth runners finish within the top 18 places and seven within the top 20. All seven registered times under 21 minutes.
By Cory Mull
EMIGSVILLE -- Since his freshman campaign, Dallastown senior Adam Katora has continued to improve as a runner.
On Tuesday at the YAIAA Championships, he saw his hard work pay off, as he became the boys' winner in 16 minutes, 29.17 seconds.
He fought off a tireless effort from South Western junior Ryan Hertzog, who ran with Katora until the last 800 meters. Katora outstretched his competition in the final straightaway, pulling away for the league win.
"We had it together until the last half-mile and then he pulled it out," Herztog said.
The result was a telling one for Katora, who secured a PR of 16:22 on Oct. 8 at the Gettysburg Invitional. Tuesday's time became his third sub-17-minute time in the last month. He also secured a 16:36 at the Carlisle Invitional in late September.
"I went out conservative with a few of the runners early on," Katora said.
Indeed, the first mile proved to be a chess match. A solid pack of five unfolded, with some runners hesitating to make a move too early.
Katora finally took charge two miles in, stringing Hertzog along for the ride.
"I was kind of surprised no one went earlier," Katora said.
With a new layout dotting the course, some runners were apprehensive about leading. One runner blew out of the starting gate, only to finish in 15th. Another sported the lead near the mile mark and finished 35th.
At least three new turns were added to the windy John Rudy Course, which also included a steep hill a little over the mile and a half mark.
Katora and Hertzog were experienced on the hills, however, and utilized their strategy well.
"My coach told me before the race that I didn't have to be leading after the first mile," said Hertzog, who finished fifth a year ago. "So I went out a little softer then I usually do. I held back. When I caught him, I started pushing the leader and he and I went off."
For Katora, he had more on his mind. A disappointing junior campaign, in which he missed out on states, was still hanging in his mental closet. He accomplished the feat as a sophomore and is now looking to return to the state's final meet of the season.
Taking third was West York senior Kevin Chambers (16:58). Red Lion senior Matthew Croft, who was second a year ago, secured fourth in 17:04. Central York senior Drew Belnick followed in fifth at 17:12.
Rounding out the top 10 was Patrick Reilly of Dallastown (17:14), Bryan Procopio of Susquehannock (17:16), Brady Wilt of Biglerville (17:18), Caleb Gatchell of Red Lion (17:19) and Nate Vitacco of Northeastern (17:20).
Wilt was one of three freshman in the field's top 20 and the only in the top 10.
"My hopes were to stay toward the top," Wilt said. "My coach said, 'Don't worry' because I'm a freshman and she said you have three years ahead of you. This is a learning experience."

Westtown School
Meet Story and Photos by Lex Mercado
Because of heavy rains forecast for Wednesday, October 19th, the meet has been postponed until Friday, October 21 with the same schedule.
Both West Chester Henderson squads came into the day as solid favorites to win their league championships. Both teams managed to achieve that goal. But the competition that challenged them on this day was game and that set up for some great competition for all involved.
West Chester Henderson's boys started their race in a large pack which also included some Great Valley athletes. After a 5:01 first mile, Ned Willig of Great Valley made a surge into the lead, a lead that he would never relinquish. Willig ran 15:58 to win the league title. But the action behind him made the team finish close. Both Great Valley and Henderson had four runners in the top ten. Great Valley went 1-3-6-10 while Henderson went 2-4-7-8. But a 1-6 Henderson spead of 33 seconds was just enough for Henderson to retain their league championship over Great Valley 32-40, the closest margin of victory for Henderson in their run of four straight league titles.
The girls race was going to be a three team battle, with the experienced Henderson taking on the new comers Unionville and the always threatening Downingtown East. Courtney Smith of Unionville made a surge for the lead from the gun, with Stephanie Aldrich of Henderson staying right behind her throughout the race. Everytime Smith made a break, Aldrich was there to respond. Coming into the finish, Smith made one last move to pull away, and the move was just enough to hold off Aldrich and award Smith with her first league championship. Her winning time of 18:44 was one second better than Aldrich. In the team standings, Downingtown East had three in the top seven, but were the only top three team with a scoring runner outside the top twenty. They would finish 3rd with 64 points. Unionville had the winner and Anne Birkenmaier finish 10. But their 4-5 runners finished behind Michelle Tracy, Henderson's number five in this race. Unionville would finish 2nd with 60 points with a 59 second spread. Their score was 10 points behind champions Henderson and their spread was 4 seconds behind Henderson's 55 second 1-5 spread.

Tri-State Coaches Association
Story by Phil Grove, editorial photos by Don Rich
Rain showers – check.
Temps in the low 40s and falling – check.
Strong gusty winds – check.
A course that got muddier with each footfall – check.
Mother Nature tried to steal the show at the Tri-State Coaches Association Championship but was overshadowed by dominating late-season efforts in anticipation of next week’s WPIAL title meet. The Malone sisters – senior Margo, junior Shannon and sophomore Mary – went 1-2-3 in leading PA#6 North Hills to a resounding girls team title, while tight team running left PA#2 Mount Lebanon in possession of the boys team crown over arch-rival PA#3 North Allegheny and individual champ Logan Steiner.
Domination and Redemption for Malones, North Hills.
Margo Malone towed the field through the opening mile in 6:23 as the leaders sought firm footing from a course softened up by the boys race. “Especially back there it got really muddy so you didn’t want to fall,” Margo said of the loop that took the field past the mile- and 2-mile marks. “I kind of looked for (green grass), but it was hard to move over because you didn’t want to go diagonally on the mud.”
The senior, who this week verbally committed to Syracuse, kept a solid cushion on a field buffeted by stronger wind gusts before younger sister Shannon broke free and set off to put a pair of red jerseys side by side at the front. “We wanted to go out conservative and once I took the lead, the strategy didn’t change that much,” Margo said. “You could definitely feel the wind. You had to keep telling yourself it’s the same for everyone and just push through it.”
The older Malone sisters continued to widen the gap over the chase pack, hitting the line together in 19:41. Shannon got credit for the victory, but there was still some work to do for the sweep as sister Mary (19:58) had to overtake Shaler Area freshman Brianna Schwartz (19:59) in the final 200 meters. Mary had been in third until the final straightaway from the castle to the finis.
“I’m so excited,” Shannon said of the 1-2-3. “That’s been a far goal for us for the season. We have gone through injuries and such, so we were a little worried. I’m so proud of Mary and Margo and our team. The 4, 5, 6 and 7 – I’m so excited for them, too.”
Add in sophomores Caitlyn Janeda (21st) and Clare Brown (34th), and the Indians finished with 61 points.
“I’m amazed and shocked,” coach Doug Sundo said of his team’s score. North Allegheny was a distant second with 146, followed by PA#10 Mount Lebanon (176), Pine-Richland (189) and Hempfield Area (273).
Thursday’s dominating performances – and team title – brought some satisfaction and relief to the Malone sisters, who started their 2011 season on a less auspicious note Sept. 10 at the Red, White and Blue Invitational.
North Hills finished fifth, with Margo struggling to reach the finish line in fourth and Shannon failing to finish after collapsing with about a mile to go.
“It’s definitely not how we planned to start off the season,” Margo said. “And (former Coach John) Wilkie just keep it so positive. He kept telling us adversity is going to make you stronger. I think every workout since then has been trying to go faster because of that.
“Just watching Shannon, Mary and even Claire and Caitlyn just getting so much better each day, we know that we can come together. We know that we are going to speed train to do well at the end. It was definitely hard at first to deal with that.”
Pack Leads Mount Lebanon Back to Top
Mount Lebanon’s boys went home with Tri-State bragging rights for the first time since 2002, thanks in large part to a literal roadblock of blue-and-gold clad runners midway through the race that ended with just a 56-second gap between the first and seventh Blue Devils.
“My top three are seniors, but all the rest are underclassmen,” coach Mike Agostinella said. “They’ve been working on it. They’ve been coming along.”
With senior Alex Moran (16:45) leading the way in fourth, the Blue Devils followed up with seniors Lawton Tellin in 11th and Kevin Tramaglini in 17th, junior Seamus Roddy in 21st and sophomore Patrick Quirk in 23rd. The winners’ 2-5 spread was just 17 seconds, with only 38 seconds separating Moran and Quirk.
“This team is as deep as the team we had in ’98 when we won the state championship,” Agostinella said.
North Allegheny followed with 90 points for a pair of runner-up finishes on the day. Central Catholic (252), Pine-Richland (282) and Altoona Area (295) rounded out the top five but were well back of the lead teams.
In the race for individual honors, Steiner played hide and seek with the field, hitting the mile in 5:15 with a five-second gap. The senior forged ahead as a pack of runners including Moran, Kiski Area’s Brent Kennedy (3rd in 16:44), Central Catholic’s Mike Runco (5th in 16:45) and eventually Altoona’s Dylan Mountain gave chase.
“Last year I did the same exact thing,” Steiner said of leading from the start. “I wasn’t actually planning on leading the whole race. I had that scared-like adrenaline rush and stayed in front.”
With about 2,000 meters left, Mountain broke free of the other three and set his sights on the North Allegheny standout. The senior admitted it wasn’t the most direct path that he followed in tracking Steiner.
“I definitely was going left and right real wide,” Mountain said. “I was trying to avoid the mud. To run 5 extra meters in the race would be better than to run straight through mud.”
With only about 200 meters left, the outcome was anything but decided as the pair exited the castle with Mountain in front. “I tried to make my move, but he had a little bit more foot speed in the end,” Mountain said of the winner.
Steiner’s 16:33 was worth a six-second victory and put a Tiger in the winner’s circle again after a year’s absence. Ryan Gil, now at Georgetown, took the Tri-State crowns in 2008 and 2009.
“It depends how much you want it at the finish,” Steiner said. “I really wanted this because I hadn’t won any big races this season yet. Winning this was a big deal for me. I really, really wanted it.”
Next up for most of these teams, a rematch in seven days on the same course with WPIAL championships and state meet berths on the line.
“Everybody says that the WPIALs are the finals. If you prepare all year, it’s just another race,” Sundo said.

PA#1 Cardinal O'Hara limited the drama in the team standings, placing five in the top ten with a 1-5 spread of 46 seconds to score 28 points and defeat Lasalle by 38.

PIAA District 8 Championships
Schenley
Story and Photos by Phil Grove
It wasn’t a Saturday walk in the park. Allderdice just made it look like one.
The Dragons swept both team championships and added an individual title as the PIAA postseason kicked off with the District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) meet at Schenley Park. The titles were the 17th consecutive for Ed Flynn’s boys team and 13th in a row for the girls.
“We’re very happy and very proud of them all,” Flynn said. “They work really hard.”
District 8 is the first to decide its qualifiers for the state meet in Hershey, with the next of 12 district meets – Districts 2, 3 and 5 – scheduled for Wednesday. Four more follow on Thursday, with one Friday and the final three next Saturday.
Junior Ean DiSilvio stood as the star performer entering the meet off quality invitational victories in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and he did not disappoint.
The junior zipped through the opening mile in 4:58 and stretched his lead to 39 seconds as he hit the 2-mile mark in 10:20. On Oct. 1 in the Central Catholic Invitational at Schenley Park, DiSilvio outraced Central Catholic’s Mike Runco and Mount Lebanon’s Alex Moran to the line in 16:38.6 in horrendous conditions.
In defending his District 8 crown, DiSilvio dropped down to a meet-record 16:24.17, breaking his mark of 16:40.74 from a year ago. His state-qualifying effort – with a 60-second cushion at the finish – came despite running solo for the entire 5,000 meters.
“I really wanted to run a bit faster than I did,” DiSilvio said. “I would have liked to break 16, but it didn’t happen. I was running by myself, and my last mile was just too slow to do what I wanted to do.”
With just one meet left on the 2011 schedule, Flynn is confident that his standout is prepared to meet the challenge of Pennsylvania’s best come Hershey.
“We’ve done the right things,” the coach said. “We’ve gone to a number of invitationals – Boardman, Erie McDowell and Mingo last week – and the goal was to see as much competition as we could and just getting used to running up there.
“Ean’s a strong kid. The goal is to latch on (to the top runners), and anything can happen up at the state course.”
The DiSilvio-led Dragons took seven of the top eight places, with Obama’s Sam Lapp keeping them from a perfect score by qualifying for Hershey in fifth. Seniors Barrett Adams, Adam Hermann and Nick Hoffman were second through fourth for Allderdice.
Sophomore Kayla Key of Westinghouse became the first state meet qualifier by winning the girls race in 21:06.36. Sister Amber – a senior – followed at 21:24.52 as the two Bulldog runners duplicated their state-qualifying finishes from a year ago.
“We had a plan and we were practicing it all week,” the winner said. “We just stuck with our plan the entire time – not go out as hard as everyone else and ease into it. The first mile was to be easy, and then after that we tried to pick it up a little more and it worked.”
Allderdice grabbed the lone team berth in Hershey by taking the next six places, led by Emma Paytas’ 21:45.50. The sophomore led most of the race before a flare-up of shin splints and the Key sisters relegated her to third.
“A good pack run for the girls,” Flynn said of his team’s 25 points. “At the Mingo meet, they finished second and part of that was because they were a good pack team.”
With two weeks before his squads take on the Parkview course, Flynn has the practice schedule mapped out.
“We are going to work hard next week, we always do traditionally,” he said. “We’ll include some team-bonding things like a two-man 10-mile run. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a lot of work. We’ll work hard through Saturday and then the week before states will be a taper week.”
