TSTCA Outdoor Championships
West Mifflin
Photos and Story by Phil Grove
Give him an inch, and Wil Bailey will take a mile. Well, actually, it was the 1,600-meter run Saturday, the first of two individual wins for the Penn Hills senior at Saturday’s Tri-State championship meet at West Mifflin.
Locked in third behind Mt. Lebanon’s Alex Moran and Moon Area’s Chris Culley with just over 200 meters left, Bailey saw a sliver of daylight along the rail and bolted to a quick lead en route to victory. His 4:25.31 bested Moran’s 4:27.58 and Culley’s 4:28.06 in raw, wet conditions.
“I had to go to the inside,” Bailey said of his only chance at victory. “I couldn’t go out and move around. When (Moran) started his kick – I already know his running style – I had to just get in there and go. It was tough, but I did it.”
Penn Hills coach Lee Zelkowitz said he was confident when his middle-distance standout made the move on the inside that the race was decided.
“I could tell by his body language that he was feeling very good, and I knew he could run with those guys and I felt he was faster than those guys,” Zelkowitz said. “I had the confidence like it’s his race, it’s his race.”
In the 800, it was definitely Bailey’s race as he had nothing but open track, splashing to the lead early and never being contested in a 1:57.48 triumph over teammate Tyree Squires and Culley.
“I run from the front,” Bailey said of his preference in the 800. “I can’t run from the back end as much because I want to run my own race. I’d rather go out and have them try to catch me. Whoever gets up to me, I’ll always have a kick so it makes me run faster.”
As off-and-on rain turned heavier during the middle part of the meet, Savon Salter of Penn Hills impressed with a 39.18 run in winning the 300 hurdles. Salter and Bailey helped close out the meet for the Indians with a 3:26.02 triumph in the boys 1,600 relay and a sweep of the four-lap baton events.
For the second consecutive invitational, Hempfield Area’s Jasmine Jones owned the girls sprints. She claimed the 100 dash in 12.65 seconds and then the 200 by almost a second in 25.99, with both clockings as good as or better than her times from a sunny and warm Hempfield Area Lady Spartan meet eight days earlier.
In his first competition of the season on an all-weather runway, South Park’s Billy Stanley did not disappoint, rifling the 800-gram javelin twice over 214 feet during the opening flight of throwers. Skipping his final three throws due to the slippery conditions, Stanley’s winning effort of 217-8 topped the field by exactly 44 feet.
Topping the other solid performances was Bethel Park’s girls 3,200 relay team, which set a school record in a PA#8 9:30.57. In the boys 3,200 relay, Moran anchored Mt. Lebanon to an 8:04.34 triumph, while Gateway’s sprint corps went 43.43 to win the 400 relay by a full second and Andrew Kuchta of Baldwin ran away from the 3,200 field in 9:39.29.
