The Sprints
The sprints at this year's state championships feature contenders from last year's championship meet. Defending 100 meter champion Trenton Coles of Clairton returns to this event, already carrying a seasonal best of 10.94 that betters the 11.15 he ran to win the gold medal last year. One of his biggest rivals is his own cousin, junior Vinny Moody, who has run 10.95. The two not only share the event… but a bedroom at Moody's home. Silver medalist Kalil Slaughter of Sheffield comes back for the rematch. Slaughter has run 10.88 this season and will want to be on the right side of the rematch. The top seed belongs to Clay Allen of West Middlesex, the 6th place finisher in 2011 at 10.78. The T-PA#1 sprinter in this field is Monty Szukics of Palmerton, running a 10.61 back on April 13.
The 200 meter dash features many of the same faces, but it does not include the defending champion Coles. Allen is the top returner in the field from 2011 (4th) and carries a 22.16 from his district meet. Slaughter is the top seed at 21.70, and also made the finals last year, finishing 8th. Thomas Taylor of Wyomissing had run 21.31 this season and is PA#3 overall. Szukics is the other runner in the field under 22 seconds at 21.95 at districts, but has a seasonal best of 21.80 from April 13.
The 400 meters features the new state leader in Bryce Straffin of Clarion. The senior ran a lifetime best 48.15 at district 9 and is the reigning silver medalist from 2011. Ben Mason of Annville-Cleona is the other returning medalist (8th), but will have work to do to catch up to the other three sub 50 second quarter milers. 2nd seed Lucas Benton of GAR Memorial (49.99) won district 2. Dustin Fuller of Washington (49.79 on April 28) and Nico Zahniser of Greenville (49.87 on May 12) will be the other top contenders to Straffin.
The Hurdles
In the hurdles, defending 300 meter hurdles champion Todd Townsend of West Catholic has been difficult to beat for most of the season. In the championship season, he has improved with each meet, which includes his repeat district 12 title in 38.12. Top mark is AA belongs to Dustin Fuller of Washington, whose time of 36.95 placed him in the national top ten on April 28. Fuller was last year's 8th place finisher. Matt Moore of Southern Columbia (2nd in 2011) and Matt Dull of Chestnut Ridge (5th in 2011) are the other returning medalists. The meet record of 37.47 set back in 1992 has a chance of going down.
In the high hurdles, Townsend is the top returning medalist from 2011 (3rd) and is one of four competitors with seed times under 14.70. Top mark in AA this season goes to top seed Chris Lenz of Trinity, who won district 3 in 14.52. Moore (14.62), Jared Horne of Schuylkill Valley (14.66) Eric Hertzog of Tamaqua (14.65 on May 9), and Tyler Horton of Bethlehem Catholic (14.68 on May 9) are also under 14.70 in the event. Townsend and Horne are the two underclass contenders amongsts many seniors.
The Distance Events
The 1600 meter run has belonged to Ryan Smathers of North East in 2012. The junior has been the most consistent runner in the event, consistently breaking 4:20 all season long. At district 10, he ran an overall PA#3 time of 4:14.74 to earn the top seed. Smathers was 2nd last year in a race where he commanded most of it until the very end. Curt Jewett of Northeast Bradford is the other competitor under 4:20 this season in AA (4:16.03 at district 4) and has established a strong streak of performances since mid April. Jordan Jackson of Wellsboro (4:22.88 in 2012, 3rd in 2011) and Andrew Hess of Central Columbia (4:26.41 in 2012, 5th in 2011) are returning medalists.
The 3200 meter run can make the case for having the best one on one dual in the competition. AA cross country champion Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill has spent most of the season as PA's top 3200 meter runner with his 9:15.01 from the Arcadia Invitational. Since then, Rico Galassi of Holy Cross has been winning big in his races, including his 9:19.51 from district 2. Shearn was a close 2nd last season in the same event, with Barrett Kemp of Oswayo Valley 3rd, Sam Williams of Northeast Bradford 4th, and Luke Jones of Elk Lake 8th. Four of the top five seeds are juniors, who were all separated by 11 seconds last year in the state finals.
LJ Westwood of Quaker Valley was the top seed last year and won the title comfortably in the 800 meters. This season, he returns as the top seed with the best AA time of 1:56.48 at district 7, but will have some good competition behind him. Smathers (1:56.80 on April 28) and Dan Alexander of Lower Moreland (1:56.98 on April 20) are the other sub 1:57 performers in the field. Alexander is the other returning medalist from 2011, finishing 8th, while Smathers made the final but missed the podium.
The Relays
In the relays, Aliquippa cracked the overall PA top eight at district 7, running a PA#6 time of 42.28 to win the district 7 title. Trinity (42.70), West Middlesex (42.91) and Washington (42.95) have all cracked the 43 second mark, each team carry potentially strong anchor legs who can come from behind and win. Hickory does return as the defending champions and the 4th seed at 43.21.
West Catholic was one of the top contenders last season in the 4x400 meter relay, but were only able to earn 4th place last season in the final. This time around, they enter as the top seed at 3:24.73 at district 12, but with plenty of company. Bellwoond Antis (3:24.80) and Boiling Springs (3:24.99) also broke 3:25 during districts week, with Boiling Springs edging out Wyomissing to win district 3. As always, experience and endurance will determine the champion.
Quaker Valley enters the 4x800 meter relay with the defending 800 meter champion in LJ Westwood, a 3rd place medal from 2011, and with the only sub 8 minute performance in AA in 2012 (7:57.46 on May 4). Christopher Dock (8:00.51) are the closest team to them, and will look to do better than their 9th place finish last season. Lower Moreland will have a 1:56 leg of their own that may be able to keep them in contention come the final.
The Jumps
In the field events, the pole vault appears to be the event with the most overwhelming of favorites competing. Patrick Anderson of Kane area won the gold medal at states last season, has cleared 16 feet each of the last two seasons (PA#1 16-4.75 in 2012) and finished 5th at the Penn Relays. Last season, Anderson missed out on the meet record of 15-10 and will have a strong chance, like last season, to put his name in that spot. The rest of the field has not cleared 15 feet yet this year, with Joey Rakowski of Quaker Valley carrying the 2nd best mark in AA (14-8 in 2012, 3rd in 2011).
In the high jump, the top two seeds will look to have better performances at states than they did in 2011. Top seed and indoor state champion John Mudrey of Hickory and Jeremy Jansco of West Middlesex both missed the medal podium last season, but are two of three high jumpers (Charles Wilson-Adams of Tyrone Area) to have cleared 6-8 in 2012. Returning medalists Zach Pressel of Northern Bedford (5th) and Josh Wise of Washington (6th) have cleared lifetime best heights this season and will use their medal experience from 2011 to contend with the 6-8 jumpers.
The long jump only has one returning medalist from 2011 (Carrington Motley of Sewickley Academy, 6th) and does not bring back the top two jumpers from 2011 that dominated the division. Pervis Johnson of Jim Thorpe has the best mark in AA by 4 inches (22-9.75 on May 9). Reggie Mitchell of Shady Side and Jeremy Jansco of West Middlesex come in with the top jumps from districts week at 22-5.75.
The triple jump also only brings back one returning medalst from 2011 (Michael Young of Chestnut Ridge, 7th) and will be an event that will create some new stars. Top seed is district 3 champion Jared Horne of Schuylkill Valley (46-0.75). Without the 50 foot jumpers this season, this event may be the most wide open in boys AA this weekend.
The Throws
Before districts week, the shot put appeared to have Matt Bell of Hickory as the big favorite. But after John Yohman of Wilmington threw a big lifetime best of 60-3.75 to defeat Bell at district 10, a one on one battle has now surfaced. Bell is the indoor champion, has the best mark in AA (61-4 on May 4) and finished 2nd last year compared to Yohman's 4th place finish. Nick Delmonaco of Riverview returns as last year's 3rd place finisher. Luke Lewis of Hickory (56-0.75) and Kaleb Kingston of Laurel (55-0.75) are the other 55 foot plus throwers in the field.
Yohman also finished 4th in the discus last season and is the only medalist returning in 2012. Yohman carries a season best of 171-11 from district 10. Bell has the best overall mark in AA this season, throwing 172-10 to complete his double victory at Baldwin on May 4 over Yohman The two are the only competitors over 170 in AA and both earned victories over the other this season.
In the javelin, only two competitors have broken the 200 foot mark this season, and a very competitive one on one battle may also surface in this event. Ryan Kerr of Brookville Area threw 207-1 at district 9 to enter the meet as the top seed. Michael Shuey of Johnsonburg has thrown 212-2 at the Brookville Invite on April 14. Kerr medaled last season with a 6th place finish with Shuey finishing right behind him in 7th. Both have bettered their 2011 state performances by over 20 feet. Alex Rankin of Bloomsburg is the top returning medalist (4th in 2011).
