The Hurdles & Jumps
With no shortage of intrigue, the hurdles and jumps could provide the most surprise finishes. While there are clear favorites in some events, nothing is ever guaranteed in these events, which is why you should keep an eye on several competitors, as opposed to just a few.
* * *
With four competitors under the 15-second mark, the 100-meter hurdles could be up for grabs. Springdale’s Emily Lelis remains the favorite, but hot on her heels are Amy Hicks of Swenson, Cassidy Jenkins of Lakeland and Gina Lupica of Villa Joseph Marie.
100H
Emily Lelis, Springdale -- 14.72
Amy Hicks, Swenson -- 14.72
Cassidy Jenkins, Lakeland -- 14.91
Gina Lupica, Villa Joseph Marie -- 14.92
Paige Lumley, Richland -- 15.03
The 300-meter hurdles could be a tandem finish, with Amy Hicks and Tichina Rhodes, both of Swenson, expected to compete for state gold. Springdale’s Emily Lelis isn’t far behind, but she will have to make up ground, as will Gina Lupica of Villa Joseph Marie.
300H
Amy Hicks, Swenson -- 44.56
Tichina Rhodes, Swenson -- 44.69
Emily Lelis, Springdale -- 45.08
Gina Lupica, Villa Joseph Marie -- 45.08
Elyse Skerpon, Sayre Area -- 45.85
Cassie Swartzbaugh, Youngsville -- 45.85
Third place a year ago in the long jump, Lauren Ball hopes to take home her first gold. The Bloomsburg star is far and away the leader in the event, with a brilliant 18-10.50 on record. If she gets one early, it could be over. Potentially battling for silver could be Alexis King of Wilmington and Amani Nesmith of Swenson.
LJ
Lauren Ball, Bloomsburg -- 18-10.50
Alexis King, Wilmington -- 18-00.50
Amani Nesmith, Swenson -- 17-10.00
Mariah Burns -- Wilmington -- 17-10
Kayla Hope, Tamaqua Area -- 17-10
Defending state champion Lanae Newsome, with the second best jump heading into the event, still should be considered the favorite in the triple jump. Paige Lumley, of Richland, was runner-up to Newsome a year ago, however, and she obviously has a lot to prove. It could be an interesting matchup against the state’s two best AA triple jumpers. Lauren Ball of Bloomsburg was third a year ago, while Britni Phillips was fifth. They could potentially steal gold, too.
TJ
Paige Lumley, Richland -- 40-02.25
Lanae Newsome, Brookville -- 39-09
Britni Phillips, Bloomsburg -- 38-00
Lauren Ball, Bloomsburg -- 37-11.50
The high jump typically has a unique turnover. With a number of competitors all vying for medals, this one could be a crapshoot. However, on the inside track for the podium is Hickory’s Corrin Regginello, with a mark of 5-4 on record. Alex Schrieffer of North East finished just outside the medal winners last year, so she will be aiming to improve on her mark. Defending state champion Lauren Lubarski of Hickory will not be competing in the event after no-heighting at her district meet.
HJ
Corrin Regginello, Hickory -- 5-4
Alexandra Schrieffer, North East -- 5-4
Third place a year ago, Marissa Kalsey is in line claim her first pole vault gold. Her 12-6 mark could place her outside of anyone’s grasp. Rebekah Petty of Greenville, seventh a year ago, could potentially slip into first with an outstanding performance.
Pole Vault
Marissa Kalsey, Waynesburg Central -- 12-6
Rebekah Petty, Greenville -- 12-00
Virginia LaMacchia, Central Columbia -- 11-6
Devan Kerecman, Holy Cross -- 11-0
Vicki Soltys, Milton Area -- 11-0
Madison Depner, Trinity -- 11-0
The Sprints
West Catholic’s Jada Steward appears to be the favorite in the 100 and 200, but she will have a number of stars within an earshot of the top medal. Swenson Arts & Tech’s sprinting arsenal is her biggest competitor, with a number of competitors fielding all three events. All three events will crown a new state champion, so a number of surprise finishes could mark an interesting sprinting section.
* * *
The West Catholic star sprinter, runner-up a year ago, could claim her first gold medal in the 100. She is hands down the favorite in the 100, with a recorded time of 11.86 in the books. If she gets off the blocks like usual, there should be little contest. Amani Nesmith of Swenson will be looking to steal the race, as will Alyssa Wise of Washington and Ellen Ellen Shepard of Central Columbia.
100
Jada Steward, West Catholic -- 11.86
Amani Nesmith, Swenson -- 12.08
Alyssa Wise, Washington -- 12.25
Ellen Shepard, Central Columbia -- 12.34
Gina Lupica, Villa Joseph Marie -- 12.49
Tiarra Scott, Avon worth -- 12.48
The 200 will be crowded at the top, with Jada Steward and two Swenson stars potentially toeing the line by Saturday’s finals. It could be one of state’s premier events. Jada Steward is the favorite, as she was third a year ago, but Imani Harris-Quillen (fourth in 2011) also is within striking distance. Tichina Rhoads is the upstart in 2012. And Newsome shouldn’t be discounted, as she was fifth a year ago.
200
Jada Steward, West Catholic -- 24.56
Tichina Rhoads, Swenson -- 24.97
Imani Harris-Quillen -- Swenson -- 24.97
Lanae Newsome, Brookville -- 25.26
Imani Harris-Quillen is the favorite to win the 400. She was third a year ago and could earn her first gold medal. However, Hanover area’s Amy Viti will be tight on her heels, as will Kim Watterson of Springdale.
400
Imani Harris-Quillen, Swenson -- 57.36
Amy Viti, Hanover Area -- 57.56
Kim Watterson, Springdale -- 57.66
Jessica Pereira, Palmerton -- 58.32
Melanie Hartley, Milton Hershey -- 58.38
Marina Wareham, Kennedy Catholic -- 58.54
The Distance Events
One of the biggest stories in the 3,200 is the amount of distance Boiling Springs’ Meredith Speakman has put on the field. She wasn’t even in the field in 2011. The Syracuse commit has had a tremendous senior campaign, which could be capped off with a state gold in the eight-lapper. She has a nearly 12 second gap between her closest competitor. Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center, meanwhile, is looking to double in the 800 and 1,600. As the top seed in each race, she is on her way to claiming her third straight title in the mile and her first in the 800.
* * *
Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center and Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic are expected to duke it out at the top. But from there, the 800 could be an interesting race, with four competitors close within grasp of each other. Lillie Brown, the defending champion from District 3, has a difficult road ahead. She’ll need a good performance to out-kick Waynesburg Central’s Peyton Hampson, who was fifth a year ago, or Melissa Cruz from Holy Redeemer. Margo Darragh, of Fort Cherry, finished outside the medal-winners in 2011 and could be looking to rebound with a big finish this year.
800
Angel Piccirillo, Homer Center -- 2:12.48
Kennedy Weisner, Elk County Catholic -- 2:12.59
Peyton Hampson, Waynesburg Central -- 2:16.53
Melissa Cruz, Holy Redeemer -- 2:17.05
Margo Darragh, Fort Cherry -- 2:17.06
Lillie Brown, Boilling Springs -- 2:17.15
Shannon Quinn, Trinity -- 2:18.93
In the mile, Angel Piccirillo will be looking to add her third title. Behind her in the heat sheet is Hickory’s Morgan Richards, who will be looking to break five minutes. She was fifth a year ago. She will be closely followed by Adair Gennocro, and possibly Erika Huffman, who did not finish a year ago in the race. Megan McGarrity, of Saint Basil Academy, is also a sleeper.
1600
Angel Piccirillo, Homer Center -- 4:48.28
Morgan Richards, Hickory -- 5:03.35
Adair Gennocro, Saint Marys -- 5:07.78
Erika Huffman, Wyalusing Valley -- 5:08.36
Megan McGarrity, Saint Basil Academy -- 5:11.06
There’s no doubting Boiling Springs’ Speakman in the 3200. She will be looking to break 11 minutes in the race. The question will be whether she’ll have enough singular drive to get it done. A battle for second could be had by Saint Mary’s Adair Gennocro and Winchester Thurston’s Madeline Schmiedeknecht.
3200
Meredith Speakman, Boiling Springs -- 11:01.57
Adair Gennocro, Saint Marys -- 11:13.99
Madeline Schmiedeknecht, Winchester-Thurston -- 11:17.25
Elizabeth McDonald, Sacred Heart -- 11:17.64
The Throws
In the throws, Hickory could prove to be a dominating force. With high seeds in each of the three events, the team has a chance to make a signature statement with a potential three gold medals. Jennifer Neider is the top seed in the shot put while Lauren Lubarski and Taylor Woods head up the discus event. Lubarski is the top seed in the discus and is the third seed in the javelin. Some catch up would need to be done, though, as 2011 runner-up, Fort Cherry’s Jessie Merckle best throw is nearly five feet farther than the second best competitor other than returning champ Christine Streislel, who has thrown over 160 feet this season.
* * *
There will be no Megan Dornish in 2012, so the event’s top medal will be up for grabs. Lauren Lubarski is the favorite in the discuss, with an impressive heave of 142-03. She was seventh a year ago. She is closely followed by teammate Taylor Woods, whose 141-05 isn’t far behind. Woods was a bronze medalist in 2011. North Schuylkill’s Carter Green has a chance to make a statement if she unveils a big throw early.
Discus
Lauren Lubarski, Hickory -- 142-03
Taylor Woods, Hickory -- 141-05
Carter Green, North Schuylkill -- 134-01
Jennifer Neider, Hickory -- 131-09
Jennifer Neider has a considerable lead margin in the shot put, with her best heave nearly four feet above teammate Taylor Woods. Woods shouldn’t be discounted, though, with a handful of experience to count on. Mary Newell, of Villa Joseph Marie, and Emily Campbell, of Slippery Rock, will be within striking distance.
Shot Put
Jennifer Neider, Hickory -- 45-04.50
Taylor Woods, Hickory -- 41-08.50
Mary Newell, Villa Joseph Marie -- 39-06.50
Emily Campbell, Slippery Rock -- 39-04.50
Christine Streisel, Tamaqua, comes in as the defending champion and the only girl in the state to throw over 160, going 160-11 at her home meet in late March. Since then she has gone over 150 five consecutive invites, including winning the Penn Relays with a throw of 154-11. 2011 runner-up Jessie Merckle of Fort Cherry should once again be Streisel's main competition. Her heave of 156-08 at her District meet was a PR and certainly sets her up with a great chance at her first title. Perhaps Lauren Lubarski, of Hickory, could also make a run to sneak into the top spot as well. She was seventh a year ago. This should be a very interesting event.
Javelin
Jessie Merckle, Fort Cherry -- 156-08
Christine Streisel, Tamaqua Area -- 151-10
Lauren Lubarski, Hickory -- 147-09
Clarissa Knauer, Northern Potter -- 145-04
