PA ALL STATE XC TEAMS SELECTED!

November 7, 2001 - The vote must have been tough for Men's and Women's Athlete of the Year. Rarely is PA blessed with such incredible talent in the same year. For the girls, North Allegheny's StephanieMadia took the honor, based on her win in WPIAL, States, and her qualifying performance at Northeast Foot Lockers. But Jessica Cickay, Council Rock, won her district, lost States by a mere half second, and finished ahead of Madia at Foot Lockers, where both earned a trip to the "only true national championship in high school sports." And for the boys, it must have been equally as tough. But Andy Weilacher of Eisenhower gets the nod over Baldwin's Dan Mazzocco, probably on the basis of Foot Lockers, where Weilacher finished 3rd in the Northeast, and qualified for the championship. As most know, Weilacher and Eisenhower teammate Matt Allenson were injured in an auto accident 11/29. Allenson remains in the hospital, while Weilacher is home, but unable to compete at Foot Lockers.

The girls' Coach of the Year is Allentown Central Catholic's Jack Pressman, who simply helped his team believe in themselves when others apparently didn't. The effort led his team to a AAA Championship, the second in a row for District 11. The boys' Coach of the Year is Cedar Cliff's Ken Roseberry, who kept his talented squad focused on the prize after coming so close in 2000. One helped his team exceed expectations, while the other helped his team meet expectations. Both are formidable challenges, that each team accomplished well.

The full lists of first and second teams are below. All State teams from the 2001 Indoor and Outdoorseasons can be found at the PTFCA website.

NOTE ON THE PROCESS: The 2001 Pennsylvania All State Cross Country team was announced late Friday, December 7 by the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association. The team was selected by a committee, taking into consideration honors won, quality and consistency of performance, and head-to-head competition. As with any selection of this type based on subjective criteria, there will be discussions about who may have been overlooked, or who may have been elevated or demoted. And those discussions are fun. But none of the opinion should diminish the accomplishments of these athletes. Each has earned their place by dedicating their summer and fall to cross country, and pushing themselves beyond probably even their own expectations. Congratulations to all!
