10/27 - Sonja Hinish captures second district title

PIAA Districts 5&6 Championships

AA GIRLS - Bishop Guilfoyle sophomore Sonja Hinish captured her second District Championship after finishing 10th in last year's state meet. She won in a close race over Forest Hills junior Leanna Nastase, who should also contend for medalist honors after finishing 33rd last year. The Central Cambria girls repeated as district champs and will be joined at states by Bishop Guilfoyle, who is led by Hinish and fellow sophomore Angela Greaser. AAA GIRLS - Hollidaysburg freshman Megan Duffett won her first district title as the Altoona girls ran away with the team title. AA BOYS - United and Forest Hills punched their tickets to states in a close race. Three medalists from last year's state meet will be heading back: Westmont sophomore Dave Mock, who was the top freshman at last year's state meet in 24th place, captured his first district title. Mock's junior teammate Steve Gonzalez was 17th last year. Finally, Blairsville senior Bryan Herdman will return to states after just missing medalist honors as a sophomore and grabbing 10th last year. Forest Hills' Jake Strayer and Josh Beyer also look strong as does West Branch's Allen Pryde. AAA BOYS - Altoona captured their ninth straight district title in a runaway. Altoona junior Bobby Boston also captured his third individual title and expects to improve on his twelfth place finish from last year's meet. He also was a medalist as a freshman two years ago.
