District 1 Girls Highlights

Neither Ewart (left) or Miller (right) are giving an inch near the mile mark.

Several weeks ago, Upper Dublin Junior Katie Ewart (18:09) came with a few seconds of catching Wissahickon's Paige Miller (18:31). Last week, she not only caught her, but beat her for the first time at the League Championships. And Friday, at the District 1 Championships, she took another step and won the District Championship, with Miller in second. "I thought this course was more suited to Paige, and that I'd get second, but I took advantage of the little hills that are on here and went for it." Ewart put in two surges approaching two miles, and thought the whole way that Miller would come back on her. "But she ended up not coming back on me, so I just went with it." But the impact of the District Championship is still sinking in for the junior. "I always looked at Paige as so far off, and I'm really surprised I beat her. She's an awesome runner. But I am living proof that if you work hard, you get results."
At about 1/4-mile from the two-mile mark, Ewart is pushing the pace on Miller.

Radnor's Colleen Flanagan came back from a DNF at her League Championships to take fourth. "My goal for today was to be in the top ten, so I was really happy."

In the girls AA race, Joanna Marlow and Ashley Ippolito of New Hope Solebury finished one-two, but their team failed to qualify for States. That honor went to Gwynedd Mercy. Marlow won in 19:17.
Marlow leads comfortably at the halfway point.
