Some of PA's best distance runners produced some big national calibur performances on the first weekend of the new year!
The reigning AAA cross country champion Courtney Smith made a big splash in her 2013 debut with a state leading and US#4 performance in the 3000 meters, running 10:04.19, over 20 seconds better than the next best PA performance this season. Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy is showing that a season of cross country is doing great things to her 800. She finished 2nd at the Hispanic Games in the 800 meter run with a US#2 time of 2:12.29, which is 3 seconds better than her best performance at this time last year and two seconds off her indoor lifetime best. In the mile, Sara Sargent of Pennsbury ran a solo 5:02.90 at Lehigh on Friday night to overtake Marissa Sheva of Pennridge (PA#2 5:06.20) and Veronica Eder (PA#3 5:10.36).
In the sprints, Caela Williams of Penn Wood regained the state lead in the 400 meter dash at the Hispanic Games with a US#10 time of 57.37. Emma Keenan also broke the 59 second barrier on Friday night at Lehigh with a PA#2 58.90. Williams teammate Christina Holmes ran a PA#2 time of 25.86 in the 200 meter dash at the Armory just ahead of Kayla Coley of Cheltenham (25.90).
In the relays, Pennridge jumped ahead of the pack chasing Swenson and Penn Wood in the 4x200 meter relay, running a PA#3 mark of 1:46.87. Great Valley took over the state lead in the 4x800 meter relay at the Chester County Championships with a US#4 time of 9:33.58. Great Valley already holds the state lead in the distance medley. Strath Haven joined the state top four in the 4x400 meter relay with a PA#4 time of 4:07.14.
In the field events, Amanda Benninghoff of Council Rock South took sole possession of the state lead in the pole vault at Lehigh with a clearance of 11-6. Brittany Plummer of Kennett cleared 11 feet on Monday night at the Chester County Champs for the 2nd time this season. Macey Tanseco of Perkiomen Valley had the best shot put performance of the week with a PA#4 mark of 37-8.25. Avon Grove's Ellie Pollock jumped 17 feet in the long jump to win the Chester County meet, the 6th girl to break 17 feet this season.
