District 11-AAA

The AAA girls' race was a coming out party at the varsity level for freshman Paula Giguere of Parkland. Her 18:48 was just 14 seconds off league meet time on the same course a week ago in the Mountain Valley Conference Championships. That time took 30 seconds off her PR. Giguere appears to be a diminutive freshman while standing on the starting line, but when the gun goes off, she looks a lot like one of the stronger runners in the state, which she is. Taking control of the race from the outset, Paula says her plan was to run with the pack and push the second mile. "But I got nervous, and when I get nervous, I take off." Her goal for States is a top five finish.

Giguere's Parkland team will be joining her at States, after beating Allentown Central Catholic. Only two AAA teams advance from District 11.

Four upperclassmen pursue the frosh as they approach the mile.

The AAA boys' race was a payback of sorts for Northampton's Mike Vidumsky, who until last week, had been undefeated in 2000. "All I wanted to do today was to beat Doug (Creveling, Easton senior)." He did. By eight seconds, in 15:53. Creveling had handed Vidumsky his first loss at last week's league championships. "My coach told me I lost the race on the downhills, so I practiced that Sunday. And it worked."

"I ran possessed today." Here's Vidunsky as he nears the two-mile point.

The two AAA boys' teams heading to Bucknell are Liberty, which defeated Emmaus by 19 points.
