Jessica Perry, Peters Township AAA Champ (10:39.57)
On her strategy: "I was hoping to run even splits, and I think I did that - 5:19 and 5:20, I can't argue with those mile splits. I knew I was going to have good competition. I knew there would be three or four of us all in a pack."
On her race goal: "It was a PR by 11 seconds. I ran 10:50 my sophomore year. And I've run 10:53 twice so far this year, and 10:39 is a good chunk off off that.
Dan Mazzocco, Baldwin, AAA Champ (9::07.68)
On his race strategy: "I was supposed to make my move on the 5th and 6th laps, but Dorian (McDonald) and the other guys made it tough on me because they took the lead on the 6th lap, so I had to realign my strategy while I was running. I knew it wasn't going to be a walk in the park because I've run with these guys before and they're good runners, a lot of talent, so I expected to run hard. I was looking forward to it."The early pace didn't go to plan. I wanted to run 4:27. But my main goal was to win."
On his inspiration: "He (Danny Coval) inspired me when I was a sophomore and watching him run. He had that aura to him that everyone knew who he was. He left his mark on PA, and he left his mark on me. I looked up to him, and I was hoping that I could do that. He was like almost mysterious, you looked at him and you're saying 'this kid's amazing.' Everyone this year was really running well. I saw Rob's time, and Dorian's, and Joel's. I knew it would be good for me to be pushed the whole way. Because everyone wants to win States."
Was his goal for his senior season to win three state championships?: "We ran them one at a time, but I told Mr.Wright (XC Coach Rich Wright) that I was going to come back and that I wanted to win here. I think last year I learned more than at any other time. I think that's made me a stronger runner by losing, than it would have by winning."
What was his learning process: "I didn't know my freshman year what a good time was, but my sophomore year I wanted to become a 3200 runner and race against Coval. But I wasn't really mature enough. And a good friend of mine, Larry Quinn, told me to race the mile, and it's made all the difference this year. I've matured enough to run the 32 at a good pace."
Pat Clark, Cedar Crest, 4th in AAA (9:15.18):
On his race: "I'm happy with today. I wanted to get in the top three, and I wanted to run 9:12. But the early pace was just too fast to allow that. I got caught up with some jostling those first two laps and wasted a little too much energy. Actually, I'm a little disappointed with today."
How he keeps himself in a race mentally: "One guy at a time. You see guys in front of you, you pick them off. It's like being a kid in a candy story, you just say 'I want that one', get by it. 'I want the next one', get by 'em, and you just do that as long as you can until you can't do it any more. The problem with that strategy is that some people get a little too carried away and they push too hard. The key is staying consistent and knowing your own body."
On his plans for cross country: (He was 28th as a freshman and 13th as a sophomore). "Unfortunately, I'll be getting used to that course. Granted, I have an advantage because I've run it so many time. So I know how to race it. I just don't enjoy racing it. It's hard on the legs."
Andy Weilacher, Eisenhower, 4th in AA (9:30.21):
On his recover from a serious accident late in 2001: "I'm really happy to be back, but I missed going to FootLocker so much. But I don't think I'm back mentally yet. I just kind of lose focus part way in a race, but it's just a matter of time. My workouts have actually been better than they were in cross country. I've always considered myself a cross country runner rather than track, so I'm excited about moving up to college and the 8K."
On Matt Allenson, his teammate who was paralyzed in the same accident while on the way to prepare for FootLockers: "Matt is just amazing. I don't know how he does what he does. He's given me a lot of support."
