The Central Cambria Middle School Cross Country Team Assisted with Red Cross Services at Sept. 11 Memorial Service

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. – It was a day that brought unthinkable terror and sadness to the United States, but it was also a day that united an entire nation in compassion and patriotism.

On the 12th anniversary of 9/11, the American Red Cross joined the rest of the country in remembering those who lost their lives that day, as well as in honoring the brave individuals who helped the victims and their families.

The local American Red Cross provided support services to guests attending Wednesday’s Sept. 11 memorial service at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., and the Central Cambria Cross Country Team assisted in those efforts.

“We are proud to be associated with this team of outstanding, hardworking young adults,” said Colleen Sherman, executive director of the local Red Cross. “It is wonderful to see this group of young people apply the sportsmanship they learn in service and remembrance of the heroes of Flight 93.”

Eleven cross country team members assisted Red Cross volunteers in distributing water bottles and snacks to guests at the event, as well as flagging down emergency personnel if someone was in need of first aid. Additionally, the team assisted with post-event clean-up efforts.

“To be a part of this 9/11 memorial was really, really special to us,” said Randy Wilson, cross country coach at Central Cambria High School. “We stress the importance of being well-rounded students to the kids, so to do community service while honoring the flight victims is really amazing.”

Volunteers are the backbone of the Red Cross, making up more than 95 percent of the organization’s workforce.  Every day, the Red Cross relies on young volunteers to raise awareness of the humanitarian organization’s powerful work in the community and to encourage the involvement of future generations.
