LEAGUES WEEK: Goldstein wins, Notre Dame girls win by 1! Episcopal beat Malvern at Inter-Ac!

THURSDAY

PAC 10

Perkiomen Valley girls were flying high as one of the top teams of the season. Their magic carpet ride almost hit a brick wall on Thursday at the PAC 10 Championships. Led by a league gold medal win by Annie Glodek in 18:53, the favored Perkiomen Valley held off the 63 second spread of Owen J Roberts by one single solitary point, 38-39! Both teams had five runners inside the top 15, and Owen J Roberts fell a point short despite accounting for half of the top six finishers. Allison Brunton led Owen J Roberts with a silver medal performance.

For the boys, Spring-Ford continued their momentum from the Paul Short Run victory by recording a solid 34 second spread led by a 3-4-5 finish from Zack Smith, Dominic Derafelo, and Owen Moore to score 38 points and win by 32 over Owen J Roberts. Individual gold went to Jeff Kirshenbaum of Methacton, who ran 15:55 to win by 37 seconds over Liam Conway of Owen J Roberts.

Philly Public

For the first time in 8 years, Masterman fell short of winning the Public League crown, losing to Central via the 6th runner tiebreaker with each team scoring 35 points. Central used a 78 second spread and had 6 in the top 14, including the number 6 runner Matt Frishkoff, who sealed the upset win by finishing six places ahead of Masterman's number 6. Masterman did have the individual champion, as Joe Previdi cruised to the gold medal in 16:56.7.

For the girls, Masterman avoided the upset bug with the help of two 9th graders. League champion Marina Mancoridis (21:44.9) and bronze medalist Viki Mancoridis (21:51.3) led three of the top four finishers for Masterman to score 25 points to defeat Central by 28.

Tri State

After a late start to the season and then a stuttering start thereafter, Kelsey Potts of Mount Lebanon managed to put it all together in time when the meets really start to matter. Potts ran 19:23.3 to hold off Rachel Hensler of Seneca Valley by 3 seconds to win the AAA race.

The AAA race also saw the end of Villa Maria's undefeated run. The AA state champions fell short to Seneca Valley 50-65 thanks to the Seneca Valley trio of Hensler, Julia Kooser, and Mariah Mack accounting for half of the top six finishers.

AA gold went to Madison Betrovich of Uniontown, who ran 22:06 to win by a slim seven seconds over Jenny Murtha of Keystone Oaks. Betrovich also led her team to the AA title over Keystone Oaks 35-40.

Class A honors went to Tori Panian of Seton-Lasalle, who led a 1-2-3 finish for her team with Caitlin Guinee and Liz Farnan for a gold medal win for herself in 22:11 and for her team with 21 points.

For the boys, Mike Kolor of Seneca Valley earned the biggest win of his cross country career, running 16:17 to hold off Marc Migliozzi and Jacob Stupak of North Allegheny. The North Allegheny duo led the state champions to another victory and a perfect record on PA soil, scoring an incredible 23 points with a 37 second spread and five of the top seven finishers in the AAA race.

AA honors went to Micky Phillippi of Derry Area, who overcame the odds against the Greensburg Salem trio of Frankie King, Cameron Binda, and Mark Brown to win the gold medal in 17:23. Despite the 2-3-4 finish, Greensburg Salem missed out on the team title by 4 points behind Mars Area and their 25 second spread with five top 15 finishers.

In the Class A race, Aaron Mylan of Jefferson-Morgan ran 17:29 to win the gold by 18 seconds, the most comfortable margin of victory of the day. Greensburg Central Catholic scored 19 points to win the team title.

KSAC

Cranberry boys placed four in the top seven to secure a 28-56 victory over North Clarion. The runners up did have the individual gold medalist, as Isaac Wilson ran 16:32 to win the title by 16 seconds.

For the girls, freshman Samantha Woolcock won the league title on her first attempt, running 20:06 to win by 10 seconds over Abbie Schmader of North Clarion. Woolcock also led four of the top five finishers overall for her team to cruise to the team title with 33 points.
