Jones, Affolder, Cheltenham Set PA Records: New Balance Nationals Indoor Day 3 PA Recap

Boys' NBNI Day 3 Recap

After setting the national record in the DMR on Friday night, Noah Affolder wasn't done putting his name in the record books this weekend.

The Carlisle senior took second place in the boys' 2 mile in a very competitive race with Tennessee's Brodey Hasty and Rhode Island's DJ Principe. Affolder ran a time of 8:46.08 to shatter the previous PA state record and also break the 3000 meter state record en route to that 2 mile record (The Armory records F.A.T. "en route' splits). Affolder's 3K split was 8:16.56.

Affolder and Principe exchanged the lead throughout the race. Hasty stayed right on their shoulders the entire time. In the final lap, Affolder and Hasty pulled away from Principe, but Hasty had the better kick and won in 8:45.16.

Jordan Geist of Knoch returned to The Armory, a day after winning his second straight state title in the shot put. This time, it was the weight throw. Geist took second in an epic battle with Ohio's Jake Wickey, who took home the national title. Wickey threw 79-6.75 for the win, which is good enough for the US#13 all-time best. Geist was a close second, throwing 79-4.75, US#14 all-time, for second.

Coatesville's Terrance Laird closed out his final indoor season with a strong showing in the 200 meter finals. Laird clocked a 21.45 to edge out Eric Harrison for third overall in a crazy fast race that Tyrese Cooper won in 21.05.

Some fast times were dropped in the mile. Bishop Shanahan's Josh Hoey lowered his season best and PR in the event, placing sixth in 4:08.59. That is the second fastest mile in state history, just behind Noah Affolder's state record of 4:07.24 from the Millrose Games this winter. That also earns Hoey All American states. Carlisle's Sam Affolder ran strong as well, placing seventh in 4:09.89, also a PR.

Downingtown East's Jeremy Jennings closed out his season on a high note. The senior clocked a time of 6.83 to place fourth in the finals of the 60 meters to earn himself All American honors.

Strath Haven's Dayo Abeeb had a strong day in the triple jump. He leaped a best of 47-4.5 to place seventh overall, missing All American honors by two inches. That jump is just off Abeeb's season best and PR.

In the 4x400, a few PA squads ran well. Bishop Shanahan, the state champs, ran 3:22.18 take eighth overall. Abington ran 3:22.63 for tenth overall and Council Rock South was 13th in 3:23.97.

Penn Trafford's Nick Wagner placed 18th overall in the 800 meters, running a time of 1:55.73.
